Doorbell cameras are mainly installed in order to screen visitors before you open the door when you’re at home, or to keep an eye on who stops by your house when you’re not there.
But on many occasions, doorbell cameras have proved life-saving. Like when a man told his neighbor that her house was almost on fire via the doorbell camera.
Or they can sometimes change a person’s life. Or they can be proof that Good Samaritans are still out there spreading kindness in a world that, today, looks like a scary place.
This is exactly what happened in this story. A Good Samaritan helped an elderly woman after a dangerous fall in her front yard.
Fred Austin was on his ride for Little John Portable Toilets, just like he does every day. As he was passing by a certain neighborhood, he saw that a woman had just had a scary accident.
“Just the thought of [my mother] on the sidewalk, bleeding, with nobody to help her, you know, is just your worst nightmare,” the elderly woman’s son told WYFF News 4.
Indeed, the woman had had a terrible fall, but there was no one around to help her. When the man received a phone call from his sister, he was terrified.
“I get this call from my sister,” the man said, “who said ‘Hey, mom has had a fall, we’re calling 911.”
Luckily, the woman didn’t stay helpless for long.
When Austin realized that the woman was in danger, he knew he had to pull over and help her. His first thought was to notify the neighbors, but it seemed that nobody was at home at that moment.
“I went to the neighbor’s house and knocked on the door, I get no response. By that time I panicked,” he admitted. “I told her ‘I’ll pick you up, I’m gonna get you in the house.”
Indeed, he took the woman in his arms and carried her to her house. All that time, he kept talking to her, asking her to stay with him.
Although it was obvious that the man was scared himself by the sight of the bleeding woman, his kindness prevailed, and so he took the woman home safely.
“If that was my mom or grandma I’d want someone to do the same. There was no way I could pass her and just leave her there,” Austin said.
Only a while later, the emergency services arrived at the woman’s house. The elderly woman was taken to the hospital, where doctors found she had a broken hip and cheekbone.
Now she’s recovering at the hospital, and she will be fine. All thanks to her guardian angel, as her son calls Austin.
But Fred doesn’t accept the title. He did what anyone should have done in a similar situation.
“I don’t want to be named a hero,” Fred Austin sayd. “It’s just something I was supposed to do- help someone.”
