We all look forward to the best part of the Superbowl each year… the commercials! Despite being one of the most-watched television programs each year, many people don’t watch it for the intended purpose of the game – football.
Not everyone loves football, but everyone loves laughing.
Knowing that, advertisers have since jumped on the chance to shove as many ads as they can during the few hours that they have the country’s attention. While many nowadays believe the “golden age” of Superbowl commercials to be over, we can still look back with a nostalgic spirit and remember the great moments from commercials past.
There are always a few brands that have a consistent theme.
Of those, Budweiser and Doritos have reigned supreme. Looking back on their commercials is like walking into the funny past of last decade! If we pay attention, we can see themes that have run through them that are present in their advertising to this day. For Budweiser, that means Clydesdales!
In the Superbowl, one commercial was aired that we still remember now!
Who doesn’t remember the Budweiser donkey? Don’t worry if some of the details elude you, however. We are going to go over them and have a much-needed laugh here in 2020.
The Budweiser donkey is a classic underdog, heartstring-pulling story that we can all appreciate.
The commercial opens with a team of Clydesdales pulling a cart down a dirt path. As the horses pull, a voice breaks through and begins telling us a story!
“Since I was born, I dreamed of being a Budweiser Clydesdale. The only problem is, I was born a donkey.”
As the camera pans out, we see the little donkey watching his majestic (distant) cousins doing what he has always dreamed of doing – working on their team pulling wagons.
Now that we have tension in the story, it’s time for the climb!
Miley was right when she said it was all about the climb – and climb this little donkey does! The video then goes to cutscenes of the little fellow practicing every day to be the best Clydesdale he could be. Trotting in a circle and pulling a little wagon were all part of his daily routine. He even had a little 6-pack of beer in his cart!
He even tried hair extensions!
One of the classic Clydesdale features is the tufts of hair that start mid-way down their legs. Donkeys don’t have that naturally, but this little one was determined to look the part! Getting the extensions on his legs was the best thing he could come up with, and it looked hilarious.
Finally, he earned an interview with the “Clydesdale committee.”
When the massive group of horses asked the little donkey what made him think he was ready to be a Clydesdale, the donkey said the only thing he knew how. He brayed! With a piercingly loud noise, he let out a noise that few consider to be “graceful” or “sweet.”
“I must have said something right!”
As all underdog stories end, the newest addition to the team of horses was our little friend! The commercial was an awesome mix of funny and uplifting – a combination that seems to work! Who doesn’t love a hearty chuckle and the warm fuzzies?
