For the last couple of months, restaurants have been operating under strict rules to ensure the public’s safety. One of them is setting a time limit for customers which determines how long they can stay and be seated at their tables.
A group of restaurant-goers in New Jersey wasn’t amused by the stricter rules.
Beth, a Glenbrook Brewery’s server, notified them that their time was almost up. However, instead of just following the rule and leaving the place after their time was up, the group expressed their disappointment in a rude way.
They left an upsetting note.
It said:
“I’m sorry the server gets screwed on this. Don’t kick paying customers out after 90 minutes.”
The message surprised the staff since it was a commonplace rule in the entire service industry to set a time limit. It’s a direct result of reduced capacity limits due to COVID.
In an interview with NBC New York, Beth shared:
“It’s not like we’re trying to keep people from staying here, it’s just something that needs to happen in 50 percent capacity for a business to survive.”
Making the note wasn’t the only disappointing thing the group did.
After they ate their food, they settled their bill and left the place. They didn’t leave any tip behind and the restaurant’s taproom manager found it weird.
He asked the customer if the service was good and if he enjoyed himself. The customer replied with a ‘yes’. Despite the good service, the person still refused to leave no tip.
At first, Beth asked to remain anonymous.
However, the restaurant owners believe that she didn’t deserve that kind of treatment. For them, Beth is a hard worker.
In fact, she’s actually a nurse. She’s working a second job while studying to complete her doctorate in nursing practice.
The restaurant didn’t mean to make the incident go viral.
However, after a photo of the receipt was posted online, the news reached a lot of residents. Most of them were quite upset about the customers’ actions.
An anonymous Morristown resident started collecting donations for Beth.
Public support and money started pouring in. They were able to earn as much as $2,000 for the hardworking nurse.
In the same interview, Beth shared:
“The public support and outpouring, the kind comments, just the things people say brine me to tears.”
The money won’t just be going to her.
Even if the money was collected to make up for the way she was treated by the rude customers, Beth decided that she won’t keep everything to herself. She’s planning on splitting the money with the other servers. Plus, she was also planning on donating some of it to the community, particularly to health care workers.
It wasn’t the first time the restaurant had to deal with rude customers complaining about the strict regulations.
Like most restaurants, Glenbrook Brewery requires its customers to observe proper social distancing and wear their masks. Although these are common rules, there are still people who are finding it hard to follow them.
One of the owners has something to say to those customers:
“Listen, if you can’t the follow rules, don’t come. Some people don’t get it or feel entitled, and we’re just trying to follow CDC rules. It’s a balancing act.”
