Dolly Parton is 74. She has had an amazing career and shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, she just released her album, A Holly Dolly Christmas back in October of 2020. That’s Dolly’s 47th solo studio album.
This is Christmas in Rockefeller Center 2020 and before the lighting of that beautiful tree commences, Dolly graces everyone with her rendition of the song, “Mary, did you know?”
There’s no stopping Christmas!
Dolly looks immaculate in her white dress. She has a complete band with her, surrounded by trees and festive lighting. Now where most folks her age choose to slow down and retire, Dolly still chooses to entertain!
Jennifer commented,
“I remember in past interviews she mentioned that she likes wearing white when singing songs like this because she’s singing to the Lord directly. So blessed by this performance and Dolly in general!”
The song was written in 1984.
It’s fairly new as compared to other Christmas songs. Written by Mark Lowry, the song came to be as he spoke to his mother about the birth of Jesus. Mark wrote the song as if he was meeting Mary himself, asking her about all the things Jesus would eventually do.
The song has become a modern classic with various artists putting their own spin and style on the song. It’s only fitting that Mark wrote about the mother of Jesus because of his own mother.
Dolly starts singing with an acoustic guitar accompanying her,
“Mary did you know
That your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary did you know
That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?”
She sings in a very sweet and respectful manner, fit for Jesus and his mother. And even when she hits higher notes, it’s not overly powerful. Dolly even whispers some of the parts.
Dolly is a Christian and she does not hide her faith during interviews or even some of her works.
You would think that at her age, her voice would have lost some of its qualities, but Dolly here shows everyone that she can still sing with the best of them when needed. Such a pro!
When she gets to the parts of the song where she needs to raise her voice, it comes out as a sort of adoration and praise for God. There is admiration and respect for the divine in her singing.
“One of her best performances ever imho. Dolly is healing the world, one song, one performance at a time.”
That’s according to an adoring viewer.
Amazing to see this 74 year old blending with her background singers and singing each note perfectly with the instruments. Dolly just produced one of the best renditions of this song. And everyone knows it.
And wow can she hit those notes!
Do a quick search and you’ll find lots of artists covering this classic. Now it’s up to you how you would rank them, but if Dolly’s cover isn’t in your top five, may we suggest watching it again? Listen!
The only thing that would have made this better is if the heavens opened and the angels sang with her. Go ahead and check out Dolly’s new album. Add it to your Christmas playlist too!
