When the weather outside gets chilly, it’s important to keep your dog’s needs in mind. Remember, if you’re cold, they’re cold, and they should come inside.
While it can be fun to play with your dog in the snow for a bit, it’s important to be careful not to overdo it.
The ASPCA explained that if pets are left outdoors, they can develop frostbite or hypothermia and become disoriented, lost, or injured.
“Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside.”
When Jamie Grabowski, a bus driver for the Milwaukee County Transit System, spied two dogs wandering around on the snow-covered sidewalk in below-freezing temperatures, she couldn’t just walk on by.
Now, her compassionate action has warmed hearts everywhere.
Jamie had just wrapped up her shift close to midnight, delivering passengers all across town.
Her bus was empty and she was heading back to the garage, then hopefully home where she would relax and head to bed after a long day of work.
She stopped the bus immediately and gently spoke to them through the bus window.
Instead of shying away from a stranger, the dogs made a beeline straight for Jamie with their tails furiously wagging.
“Hey, you two! You need to go home right now.”
When they didn’t budge but instead stared at her with their puppy eyes, she gave up doling out advice and instead invited them aboard her warm and toasty bus.
“C’mon, c’mon inside!”
The Doberman and the pitbull eagerly scampered aboard Jamie’s empty bus, grateful for her generosity.
They strolled to the back of the bus and sat down.
Even though it was well past midnight, Jamie vowed to stay with the pups until she found their rightful owners. She called MCTS dispatchers who then contacted the Milwaukee police.
The officers gently scooped up the pups and transported them to the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission until their worried owners were able to show up and retrieve them.
It turned out the wandering pair’s owners had been frantically searching for them in the frigid temps but couldn’t find them. By the time Jamie stumbled upon the pooches, they were 2.5 miles from their toasty warm and loving home.
MCTS tweeted about Jamie’s adventures and how compassionate she was toward the dogs while on the job, something they applauded.
Jamie had the chance to meet both the dogs and their appreciative owners.
“MCTS Bus Driver Jamie Grabowski got to reunite today with the two pups she found. She also met the dogs’ grateful family for the first time!” MCTS wrote on Twitter.
