There are few things that we wouldn’t do for the animals we love. Our dogs and cats aren’t just “sort of” part of the family – we love them unconditionally! When they get hurt, we would do anything we could to see them get better. For one dog in Ohio, it would take an entire fire crew and a sledgehammer to get him back home again.

Gertie is a pup that lives with her family in Ohio, right around the Cincinnati area. Unfortunately, Gertie had gone missing and the family had no idea where she had gotten off to. Dogs will often wander off in search of an interesting smell and lose their way and that was likely what had happened with Gertie.

Dogs are curious creatures by nature and that curiosity can get your pooch into trouble from time to time – or all of the time! As a dog owner, you have likely experienced your dog’s curious nature first hand, especially when they were a puppy. There are so many sights, sounds, and smell to explore. – Wag Walking

Day after day they searched, trying to find where their friend had gone. As the days went by, their hope dwindled and things began to look grim. Gertie was nowhere to be found and they didn’t even know how she had escaped the house.

Nearly a week went by before they had a breakthrough.

Dogs can go quite a few days without food, but water? It’s mere days.

Dogs can typically survive approximately 2-3 days without water. But, it is important to note that just because they might survive it, it doesn’t mean it’s something they should be subjected to. – Camp Canines

The fact that Gertie was still alive was quite astounding! They ended up hearing her as she cried behind the wall, hoping her family would hear her. It was a lucky moment, but it wasn’t over yet.

With a quick call to the fire department, they started working to get her out.

Gertie was unreachable and needed professional help to get out. It wasn’t going to be an easy rescue and they couldn’t just pull on her – she was totally stuck. Soon, the Cincinnati Fire Department showed up and got to work.

Using a sledgehammer, they busted a hole in the wall and revealed the stuck dog.
