Anyone who’s owned a pet can tell you that they’re a part of the family— and losing them? Well, it’s as hard as any human loss too. Laura Waltenburg’s brother experienced this heart-wrenching grief when his two dogs passed away during the same weekend.

As anyone would be in the face of not just one loss but two, Laura’s brother was heartbroken and too busy dealing with his pain to remember he had pre-ordered two large bags of dog food. Sadly, the two bags arrived just a few days after the dogs’ deaths and, understandably, initiated another wave of grief in the poor pet owner.

When Laura’s brother’s veil of sadness finally lifted a bit, he decided to contact the dog food company to ask for a partial refund, but their reaction completely blew him away…

His sister Laura shared the story to her Facebook and the Love What Matters Facebook page, garnering over 15,000 views. In it, she describes the events.

“My sister and brother-in-law tragically lost both of their dogs this past weekend. After this happened they received two 40 pound bags of dog food that they had ordered from Chewy.com. My brother-in-law sent them an email requesting permission to send the dog food back for refund minus the shipping cost.”

Now, realistically, the company had no obligation to refund the dog food. But instead of focusing on business and greed, Chewy.com went the extra mile.

“They responded with unbelievable kindness. They credited their credit card for the full purchase price and asked them to donate the dog food to a local shelter. They sent a second email requesting a picture of one of the dogs to put in there [sic] memorial book to honor her. And then today my sister and brother-in-law received these beautiful flowers from Chewy.com.
