Sometimes, life has a bad way of dealing cards.

Erica has always been driven. She went to nursing because she grew up with a brother who suffered chronic health issues. She received her CAN license at 16, LPN just two years ago, and a Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences last year.

But life has been difficult for her family. Her husband Broc was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease at age 25. His father passed away from the same disease at 42 after being diagnosed in his early 30’s.

Huntington’s Disease is called the “Devil’s Disease.”

It’s often described as a combination of having ALS, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s Disease at the same time. It’s a fatal degenerative disease as it stops parts of the brain to work properly over time.

Unfortunately, the sickness can be inherited. Erica’s six-year-old stepson started displaying symptoms at an early age. He was diagnosed with the disease last summer. Juvenile Huntington’s is extremely rare and much more aggressive and Gunnar is going through all of those.

The Secret Santa team paid a surprise visit to Erica.

The struggling mom answered the door. Despite what her family is going through, she welcomed the team with big smiles.

After the team introduced themselves and explained why they were there, Erica shared bits of her story and how challenging the past year has been.

She also introduced Gunnar, saying he’s “the sweetest but one going through a lot.”

But it never showed on the little boy’s energy. He was curious and playful. He even spoke to the microphone a few times before heading out to see the other visitors.

We can only imagine what he is going through but despite all of those, Gunnar remained grounded in his sense of wonder and kindness.

Life was challenging, but they’re about to receive a break that can help them push through.

The Secret Santa team gave them their Yuletide treats.

They gave the family $10,000, funds that can help them to buy their needs. Her husband can’t work and they’re raising growing kids. They don’t have to worry about those for a while.

They also presented the family with gas cards worth $2,000. These can help them get around most especially when they need to drive for checkups and treatment. The only thing they need now is a vehicle that can fit the entire family.

The team then asked Erica to join them outside.

There will come a time when the family will need a vehicle that can fit wheelchairs. Erica also shared that their car crashed when her husband suffered an episode on the road. For his safety, he doesn’t drive anymore.

And so, the team presented them with a brand new mini-van. Not only that but the van was also filled with diapers that her babies could use.

Erica cried and asked the team for a hug.

As the Secret Santa wanted to remain anonymous, it was the only way Erica can show how grateful she was to be on the receiving end of such unconditional kindness.

Hopefully, as the season nears its full swing, she and her family can spend time together in good spirits and good health.
