I can't imagine watching this video and being thousands of miles away. 😭

Most people install doorbell cameras for the obvious reason: to see who’s at their door and respond to them if needed.

But so far, we’ve seen doorbell cameras unintentionally put to use for all sorts of genius purposes, from alerting a frantic mom that her missing 6-year-old son had arrived home, to recording a hero FedEx driver putting out a backyard fire.

In this case, a digital doorbell has been used for the most heartwarming reason.

Major Peter DeCrans is used to deployment, having been deployed a total of three times now. But when he was deployed to Kuwait, it was the first time he’d had to leave a home with children in it.

Because of the time difference, the issue of how Peter would speak to his kids instantly rose to the surface.

Speaking to Kare11, Peter recalled:

“There was an eight hour time difference, and by the time they’d wake up to go to school I’d be in a secure building and there would be no way to be able to call them.”

An army deployment can affect a child’s wellbeing, especially if they’re not old enough to understand why mommy or daddy has left home.

Kids naturally want to be protected by their parents, and making plans to stay connected is one of the best ways to show them that an army deployed parent is still here for them.

Back at home, Peter’s wife, Cierra, was struggling for ways to keep her kids and husband in touch.

She tried making videos of the kids, but it proved difficult to keep up with. She admitted:

“To be able to make a video was not something that I could every day. Dealing with the deployment and all the home stuff and everything you have to do was so hard.”

But everything changed when the DeCran family bought a digital doorbell.

“My dad was like, one day, ‘Why don’t you guys go tell hi to your dad, you can use this function and he can see it over (in Kuwait),'” Cierra said. “It blew their little minds.”

Now, the kids were able to speak to their dad and tell him about their day, even when they couldn’t see him.

The kids started fitting their doorbell message time into their daily routine, and Peter could watch the videos back and reply to them in his own time.

Watching the videos quickly became the highlight of Peter’s day, helping him through the harder times on deployment.

And the kids loved it too, making the doorbell communication a roaring success. Mom Cierra said:

“It was one thing that they could control. No one had to help them. No one had to do anything, they could just go over there and say something to their dad and it was a beautiful thing.”

Peter eventually came home from his deployment at the end of last summer.

There’s no more deployment for him from now on, because, after 20 years of service, he’s now retired.

Showing how easy it is to stay in touch through the use of a digital doorbell, the DeCran family has inspired other families to stay in touch during the craziness of self-isolation and quarantine.
