In a world beset by cynicism and inwardness, we often forget the power of a random act of kindness.

These moments prove that as humans, it is only natural for us to look after each other, as these simple gestures can ripple through our communities.

In Galveston, Texas, a young waitress walks over fourteen miles every day.

In these four-hour walks, she has lost 25 pounds in just a few weeks. But she’s not doing this to lose weight or keep up with the daily step requirement most fitness coaches would ask from you. She’s doing it because she has bills to pay.

She’s doing it to get to work so she could send herself to college where she could earn a better chance at life.

Adrianna Edwards works at Denny’s. And just to get to her shift on time, she had to wake up a couple of hours early, and get home a couple of hours late. This is coming from a full shift as a waitress where she has to be on her feet all the time.

This is where she met a lovely couple. As they ate breakfast, the couple learned what Edwards had to endure every day. She mentioned that she was saving up to buy a car. Once she gets the car, she can work better hours and send herself to college.

The couple, moved by her story, decided to do something for the hardworking girl.

The wife asked her for more ice cream, which Edwards happily obliged, then left after eating. Little did Edwards know, she was about to get the best surprise she’s ever gotten.

A few hours later, the couple went back to the diner. They weren’t looking for more ice cream, because this time, they were looking for her.

In their hand was a key. After they left the diner earlier, they stopped by Classic Galveston Auto Group on Broadway Street and purchased a 2011 Nissan Sentra. They presented the key to her, not knowing how much it would change her life.

The offer was too good to be true, or at least according to Edwards.

The couple gave her a new car, no strings attached. It was so unbelievable, Edwards thought she was being pranked.

“In my head, I was like ‘Pranks are cool and everything’,” she said to ABC 13, “But this one is just a tad bit cruel.”

This car is not just a car for her. It was a door for better opportunities. And if the gift suddenly disappears after she wakes up, it would definitely break her heart.

“This morning, the first thing I did when I woke up was to look out my window. See if it’s actually there or if I dreamed it.” She added.

The car was still there.

And her dream of getting to college is still very much alive. Now, instead of saving up for a car, she could now start to save for her education. Her “commutes”, which take her around 4 hours, were cut to 30 minutes. This means more time to rest and more time for her to invest in herself.

The couple, who wished to remain anonymous, only asked her for one thing.

“I gave her a note that said, ‘I know it’s Thanksgiving, but I said, ‘Merry Christmas,’ and that, hopefully, someday she’ll just pay it forward,” the woman said.

It was a promise that Edwards intends to keep.
