Going to work each day can seem monotonous but there are some days that completely catch us by surprise.
As Jarrid Tansey prepared for a shift at Pizza Palace, he had no idea the day’s events would end up changing his life.
Tansey worked at the pizza place as a delivery driver, and that night they’d received an order from F&R Auto Sales, a local car dealership.
The employees at the dealership had ordered pizza and drinks for a total of $42.
When it was time to pay, however, an issue arose.
It’s unclear if there was some sort of miscommunication, but when the employees paid Tansey, they handed him an extra $5 bill and some change— money he’d assumed was his tip.
Later, however, he was surprised when the employees called back and demanded he returns with their $7 in cash.
When Tansey got back to the dealership, the following interaction was captured on film.
In the video, Tansey is completely blasted by the employees.
“It just doesn’t make sense why you’d hand me a bill that you were just going to have me drive back here to give you back anyway,” Tansey points out in the video.
However, the employees are not having it.
“Listen,” said one man. “The manager apologized once for you. Do you want him to apologize again for you?”
A female employee even goes so far as to tell him: “Out the door before I put my foot in your a**.”
After Tansey leaves, a male employee rants: “Get the f****** owner and the manager on the phone. I want that mother f***** done. I want him fired.”
The response was extreme considering the issue.
Later, the video was leaked by the man wearing a blue shirt in the bottom left corner of the video, Boston.com reported.
He was employed as a contractor to handle the dealership’s computer services— and, as previously mentioned, the footage immediately went viral.
People were outraged by the way the employees had treated the poor delivery driver.
Tansey received a ton of online support, with people even identifying the dealership in the video and leaving a host of negative reviews on websites like Yelp.
Amanda Marie Rogers, a former waitress, was especially upset by the footage and decided to do something for Tansey.
She told CNN: “For them to call him back over the money he should’ve received anyway. I decided to take it one step further.”
Rogers contacted Pizza Palace to get Tansey’s name.
She then set up a GoFundMe, writing in the description:
“I believe Jarrid should be rewarded for dealing with such crappy people. Please watch the video and donate. Even if it is $1, it will make up (maybe a little) for him having to deal with idiots like this. “
In the end, Rogers raised more than $30,000 for the driver.
Many people donated in $7 increments— the amount over which the entire situation had occurred.
“This is because of how awesome you were and handled yourself so well dealing with such cruel people,” wrote Carol Wentz along with her donation.
“”I am outraged by the cruelty demonstrated by employees of a business who rely on commissions to pay their bills,” wrote another.
After the event, F&R Auto Sales released an official apology and the female employee was reportedly fired.
In an interview one year later, Tansey said he hasn’t spent much of the money and is saving it for something like a mortgage or his child’s college fund.
