Delivery drivers are responsible for bringing your packages to your doorstep. After their job is done, they’ll leave your property and move on to their next destination.
Maryland-based FedEx driver, Mike King, has been getting attention on social media for his kind act.
The man didn’t have any packages to be delivered that day.
However, as he was going around the neighborhood, he saw strong winds had brought down a family’s flagpole. What he did next was unbelievable.
Instead of continuing his trip and minding his own business, the man stopped and went to the family’s doorstep.
There, he carefully folded the American flag. And after doing that, he placed it in a box to make sure it stayed safe.
Gail Cook, the owner of the property, was worried when she saw that her family’s flagpole was down. However, after reaching her doorstep, she was shocked to see the flag sitting in a box on the front porch.
She checked her Nest camera to see what happened.
There, she saw the FedEx delivery driver going out of his way to pick up the flag and fold it properly. She was more than thankful for what the former marine did.
In an interview with NBC Washington, she said:
“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I have to share this so people know what he’s done.”
In a different interview with Baltimore Sun, Gail shared:
“He did this not knowing anyone was watching — he just did it because it’s the right thing to do. And we just really appreciate that he took the time to do that for us.”
People on the internet felt the same way about what the man did.
One YouTube user said:
“I was a Stickman (flag man) in the military… this touches me in the profound way. Thank you FedEx and I salute you!”
Another one commented:
“He takes such care in folding the flag. Must love his country.”
There was also this person who said:
“Love this love our Flag what it stands for we need to be free !”
FedEx issued a statement as well:
“FedEx Ground is proud of the many contributions our team members and vendors make to our local communities every day. We commend the patriotic actions of Mike King, a service provider employee who went above and beyond to properly care for a fallen American flag while on his route.”
Mike was able to comment.
Via CNN and a Facebook post that’s no longer available, he said:
“It’s the marine way. Would have done better justice for Lady glory if the wind wasn’t gusting at 50. I couldn’t just drive by and do nothing.”
For Mike, what he did was probably natural for him. However, hopefully, his action will be enough to encourage other people to do the same thing. The country’s flag is precious. It’s not something we’re supposed to leave lying on the floor.
