Best Father’s day ever.
Dave is Kristin Russell‘s stepdad. She loves the guy, calling him “awesome” and even narrating how he would play Barbie with her, read to her, and supported her in everything she did including softball and Karate. Dave was always there for Kristin.
He’s an all around good guy and truly a wonderful father figure. Even biological dads could learn a thing or two from good old Dave.
Dave is a car guy.
He had a 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 which he absolutely loved. Who wouldn’t? The man has taste and it clearly shows. In fact, he loved this car so much that he even saved up money to restore it back to its pristine condition. It’s a classic.
But as much as Dave loved his 914, he loved Kristin’s mother even more. The money he saved up for the car went on to become their wedding. The Porsche was left at a garage and eventually gutted for parts. Car guys are cringing.
Poor Porsche classic!
Well Kristin herself is an amazing woman. She saved up enough money after her deployment and spent the better part of two years looking for an identical car. Those classic Porsche models are really difficult to find.
The 914 was conceived in the mid 1960s as a joint project between Porsche and Volkswagen. It debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1969 and was offered with a 1.7 engine from Volkswagen and a 2.0 from Porsche. It was a love and hate affair with the 914 which was a shame as veteran motoring journalists loved the car.
From California to Arizona.
That’s really far but it’s where Kristin found a 914 in good condition. In the same color too! So Kristin had the car transported back to a mechanic who lives near her parents. It took some work, as all classics do, but it’s a Porsche so it’s tough and durable.
Look at that baby go!
Kristin showed up at Dave’s house with a Father’s day card thanking him for all he’s done for her and her mom. She also acknowledged all his sacrifices out of his love for them. That’s enough to make a grown man cry!
While dad and daughter are locked in a loving embrace, the 914 pulls in with a little blip of the throttle, that Porsche growl getting Dave curious as he steps outside.
“Look at that! (laughter) Holy sh*t!”
Spoken like a true car guy.
Kristin goes on to tell him how she knew that he gave up his old 914 to marry her mom. Dave is stunned. He says it’s identical to his previous car.
“Whose is it?”
Dave asks.
“It’s yours.”
Kristin replies.
Again, enough to make a grown man cry.
Dave gives a little jump.
“Get the hell outta’ here!”
He gives his stepdaughter another tight hug, this time with visible tears on his loving face.
The rest of the family are filming the encounter but you can bet there were teary eyes behind those cameras. They tell Dave to get in the Porsche. The man does with obvious joy on his face. He fires it up with a huge smile too!
Pop up headlights!
Dave lets the car idle a bit, playing with the switches and controls before popping the transmission in reverse. He backs out of the driveway, definitely reminiscing the glory days of his youth while soaking in the present moment.
The road is his! Dave takes off with an expert slip of the clutch, the 914 growling away at his every touch. Whatever bond Dave and Kristin had over the many years of being together was made stronger with this selfless act of love. That Porsche is more than a car. It’s a stepdad and stepdaughter thing.
