Dalmations may be one of the most famous, albeit uncommon, dog breeds that we know of. It probably has a lot to do with the movie 101 Dalmations that came out in 1996, but Dalmations have a lot of history behind those spotted coats!
One dog-mom recently gave birth to a HUGE litter and it’s pretty astonishing.
While we can confidently say that this litter isn’t 101 pups strong, we CAN say it’s truly amazing. A dog owner in Texas was recently in the news when the story of her dog giving birth went viral.
Brittni Turner works at the Fredericksburg Veterinary Center in Texas and was the one that helped with the births.
The mama dog is named Luna and she went into labor on a Thursday around midnight. Luna and her human mom delivered five pups through the night, but by 7 am, things had slowed to a stop. For a dog, birthing is a lot easier than it is for a human so this wasn’t natural.
Luna’s owner called the clinic and decided to bring the dog in.
They figured it would be valuable to bring her in since larger dogs don’t really have complications. Once she was in, it was clear that something was wrong. Luna was rushed into surgery after they learned that the sixth puppy of the litter had become breeched.
After looking inside, they learned that there were a LOT more puppies still to come!
One after another the pups kept coming out.
I kept saying to the owner, ‘There surely can’t be anymore!’ And they kept saying, ‘There surely can’t be anymore!’ “I then said, ‘I know there’s at least two more.’ Then I would say, ‘Oh, there’s definitely one more. No, there’s two more.’ ” – Newsweek
They were so bewildered by the sheer number that they kept miscounting them!
The clinic called an “all hands on deck” to help with the massive delivery.
Everyone in the clinic was needed to help – even the receptionist came in! Soon, everything was over with and they were able to get a final count. There were 5 delivered naturally, and then another 11 via c-section – THAT’S A TOTAL OF 16 PUPPIES!
The final count came to 16 pups, an incredible number.
“We are happy to report that all 16 puppies and mom are doing great following surgery,” the clinic wrote. “It wasn’t 101 Dalmatians, but it was enough for us to have our hands full this morning!!”
Just imagine seeing 16 pups and a mom running around a home.
Usually, one dog is PLENTY for people. It looks like they are going to need to get a few more buyers lined up so they can keep their house from becoming a circus! Also, with that many Dalmations around, they may need to look our for a certain Disney villain who has a thing for Dalmation puppies.
