One of the best things that ever happens in our society is when people work for the sole benefit of people other than themselves. Unfortunately, it seems as though these true acts of generosity happen less frequently these days.
There are still those out there who want nothing more than to spend their time doing things to help others.
This is a story about a father and his two sons doing just that, helping their community.
Father & sons harvest firewood for the needy.
When they were just kids, twin brothers Harrison and Henry enjoyed helping their father harvest firewood. Their father, Shane McDaniel found this was a great way to bond with his two sons.
The family’s hardworking nature continued as the boys grew into adults.
Big storm knocks down a lot of trees.
A giant storm knocked down a lot of trees near Lake Stevens, Washington. The father decided that they could do something productive with all the wood.
“I had a lot of wood I had to cut because of storm damage and trees that were taken down. It just kept piling up and piling up. Once it got to be such an amount of wood we decided we could do something better with it,” Shane said.
Decision made to donate firewood to those who need it.
With there being so much firewood available, the father and son trio decided they would offer it to those who needed it most.
“The Pacific Northwest is a pretty rugged area, it’s cold and wet. Once I started, I saw the need and my eyes were opened up. So many people were stopping and asking to buy it and we just started giving it away,” McDaniel said to PEOPLE Magazine.
A near 7-month project
The family’s mass-generosity project lasted from March until October.
By the time they had finished, they had harvested enough firewood to fill 80 trucks! That’s a lot of wood.
Shane then posted the following to his Facebook page to look for people who could benefit from the wood he and his boys harvested:
If you know someone who BURNS WOOD, and their looking at a cold house this holiday season; maybe someone elderly or with small children in the house…then please help us help them. My boys and I have cut & split nearly 40 cords of firewood this summer. It is seasoned and ready to warm homes where it is truly needed.
“It is more firewood than most people have ever seen, as I’m sure anyone who has driven past my house has noticed. The Norms crew is standing by ready to help stack and deliver. Please remember it’s not for sale at any price. We get lots of offers. Too much blood and sweat to do that.So please….help me and my boys find the right homes that need heat and make sure NO ONE GOES COLD IN OUR HOOD this holiday season.”
Shane would later say that he really enjoys helping people. It’s an attitude we should all seek to adopt.
“It’s a pretty wonderful thing to see. You can just see this feeling of pride and sharing that I don’t think they had before,” Shane said.
“When you do good things for people, they don’t forget. I love helping people.”
