You never know what social media will pick up on – or when you’ll accidentally become “Internet famous.”
For a single dad in Texas named Jeff Saville, it was a simple text asking his daughter what he should wear on a first date.
Saville texted Carli – one of his four daughters – with a photo of two shirts, wondering which one made a better impression. Carli found it so endearing she shared the moment on Twitter in July of 2019. It didn’t take long for the Tweet to amass over 6,000 retweets (and over 160,000 likes!).
Of course, since it’s the Internet, people had quite a few opinions about which of the shirts looked better on the single dad.
Their choices were this shirt:
Or this one:
We think they both look great.
But, sadly, it didn’t matter because the date never happened.
People were outraged to find out that Jeff got stood up on his date. They found out when Carli replied to a dinner invitation with the disappointing news.
“He got home that night and he was really sad,” his daughter told the Houston Chronicle.
The people of Twitter had found a hero in the form of a single, middle-aged dad only to see his hopes dashed before their very eyes. And boy were they livid!
“OH HELL NAW! Who would stand up a man like him?” said one outraged commenter.
Plenty of people offered to track down the woman who stood up Jeff while others were simply devastated on his behalf:
“My eyes just got watery reading that. I hope he finds someone who deserves him.”
It was as if every person following the great wardrobe saga had been stood up themselves.
Jeff hadn’t even realized he had become Internet famous in just one day, and his daughter waited until the morning after his ill-fated date to show him all the responses.
“I didn’t want to make him sad and mad on the same night, so I told him the next morning,” she said.
But it turns out he was ok with it.
“Once he saw how many people were relating to it he started getting really excited about it.”
And have no fear, everyone was rooting for Jeff and now he’s got dozens of potential friends – and dates!
In fact, it seems Twitter is full of people looking to set up their single mothers!
The tweet got so much attention that Jeff and his daughters were invited to be on the show Strahan and Sarah to talk about the viral tweet just a few weeks later!
He even wore one of the shirts he modeled for the occasion.
For a while, he had his own Twitter account where he fielded date requests.
“I opened his DMs [direct messages] in Twitter so hopefully he will be getting some soon,” Carli said.
But apparently that turned out to be too much because the account has now been deactivated.
Fully dedicated to his family and deserving of the right woman, Carli told the Houston Chronicle what her dad’s ideal woman would be like:
“He wants someone who is wholeheartedly centered on the Lord and that is outgoing, funny, down to earth and sweet. That’s what he always says when he describes who he wants to find in his soulmate.”
