For schools near the road, speeding cars are always a threat to the students’ safety. For Christ, The King Catholic School in Kansan City, this concern is addressed by employing a crossing guard who will look after the children as they cross the street just outside the school.
The school chose the perfect person for the job when they hired Bob Nill, an 88-year-old man dedicated to his job and who loved the children dearly.
He did everything to keep the children safe. He did not hesitate to put his life on the line to ensure that two kids crossing the street were safe from a speeding car, even if it meant him losing his life.
Sadly, Mr. Bob died after saving two students crossing the street. A sedan went too fast and almost hit the children, if not for good old Bob getting in between the car and the kids.
It was just a few days after Valentine’s, but the people in the Kansas community where the school belonged to are in mourning.
Bob sustained injuries after getting hit by the black sedan. He lost his life at the local hospital he was brought to after the incident. The sedan’s driver was also brought to the hospital as he sustained injuries as well.
The school hailed Bob as a hero for his act of kindness and bravery while keeping the children safe.
The man, who worked for the school for half a decade, has always been known as a kind and cordial fellow. He was always ready to serve and was always focused on keeping the kids safe while crossing the street.
If not for his bravery and his kind heart, two boys aged 7 and 11 may not be around anymore. Everyone is thankful for Bob’s bravery and sacrifice, but they are also sad that the man has passed.
“He gave his life so that others could live. He saved two young boys and he gave the ultimate sacrifice,” Principal Cathy Fithian said in an interview with USA Today. “We’re just so grateful that as tragic as it was that it wasn’t more tragic thanks to his selfless act.”
Principal Fithian also shared that the woman driving the sedan stayed at the scene.
The kids were just about to step onto the crosswalk when Bob yelled at them to get back. He held the stop sign to warn the sedan, but he was hit by the speeding car.
Firefighters and the police were quick to arrive at the scene, but the injuries sustained by Bob were just too much for him. He passed away while at the hospital.
Principal Fithian has nothing but kind words for the man who made a sacrifice for the children to live.
She shared that Bob was a man who is a guardian angel and a selfless person who loved doing his job.
He cared so deeply about the kids and that led him to not think twice about keeping them safe.
