The art of swing dancing is always exciting to watch.
It can bring people back to a different era by the music, clothes, and dancing techniques.
Sondre Olsen-Bye and Tanya Georgiievska were able to bring their audience back to the early 20th century with their Lindy Hop performance at the Rock That Swing Festival.
Sondre and Tanya have been a professional swing dancing duo since 2015.
Sondre and Tanya have been competing in swing competitions since their childhood, but independently.
It was not until 2015 that Sondre and Tanya started to dance as a pair. The duo have competed professionally together ever since. The two teach swing style dances as well. Sondre and Tanya are more known for their Boogie Woogie style but can perform all different types of swing dances, including the Lindy Hop.
The Lindy Hop is a style of swing dancing.
The Lindy Hop “…is a partner dance that originated in 1920’s and 30’s Harlem, New York. The Dance itself consists of both 8 and 6 count steps and it includes footwork borrowed from the Charleston and Tap. The dance can be wild and spontaneous, with frenzied kicks and body movements, or it can be cool and sophisticated.”
The Lindy Hop really became a well-known type of swing dance at the famous Savoy Ballroom in New York City during the late 1920s. This is where the Lindy Hop even got its name, thanks to the great dancer George “Shorty” Snowden.
Sondre and Tanya took the cool and sophisticated route in their routine. The couple performed their Lindy Hop dance to the classic Frank Sinatra song “Fly Me To The Moon.” The dancing partners dressed the part as they donned outfits that would let them blend right in at a swing dance club from the 1920s!
They kick the dance off with giving each other a wink and a smile right before the music plays, these two are ready to have fun on the dance floor.
Sondre and Tanya’s choreography not only goes to the beat of the song but to the lyrics as well. When Frank Sinatra sings,
“In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby, kiss me”
Sondre grabs Tanya’s hand and in response Tanya kisses his cheek.
These two dancers are having fun with their choreography and song choice. It is so fun to watch these two perform.
While their dance starts off on a slower pace it does not take long for Sondre and Tanya to add in some quick flips and kicks. These two have the moves and are making sure to include them quickly into their Lindy Hop performance.
It is the quick and unexpected dance moves that makes this performance so fun to watch!
Tanya and Sondre’s Lindy Hop performance has been view over two and a half million times because people cannot get enough.
Some viewers had to say,
“Wow, I love this! Fly Me To The Moon is one of our favorite songs to swing to. Tanya & Sondre bring a lot of creativity and playfulness to their routine.”
“This song was meant for them! Their movement throughout ‘fly me to the moon’ by Frank Sinatra is beautifully orchestrated to enjoy and I give thanks on how magical, uplifting and entertaining I felt watching them perform. Thank you for your talent, you two!”
