Couple who played Mr and Mrs Claus for 30 years get heartfelt gift from real-life Secret Santa

When Santa needed help, Secret Santa stepped up to the call.

Steven “Grizz” Andrews might look like a biker with his flowing beard and brushed back hair, but he embodies someone or something else entirely.

Andrews is known in his local area as Santa Claus. Donned with his hand-made costume and beside Susan as Mrs. Claus, they spread the holiday cheer by giving and being of service to their community.

Andrews started being Santa when his friend got sick.

His closest friend was playing Santa but was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He got so sick that he had to put the red robes aside even if his gigs for the season were already lined up.

He then asked Andrews if he’s up to the task of donning on the mantle of Santa Claus so Christmas cheer could go on.

Andrews became Santa Claus that day.

The task quickly grew on him. What started as a shoe being filled in ended up as a life-long work. Despite being disabled, Andrews was a gift that kept on giving.

He has a soft spot for the elderly and for widows who don’t have access to contractors. He helps them by installing fixtures, most especially ramps and guide bars for access.

They also fix sprinkler systems in summers and windows and doors in winters.

While we think of gifts as material, Andrews’ gifts are a service.

As years passed, they became invested in the role. They even created their own costumes by hand. The velvet coat and the corset are from their efforts alone. But despite what they have invested, they never accept payments.

Even if they show up in parties and elementary schools, the Andrews never asked for anything in return. All they want is to make people feel that Christmas is here.

Unfortunately, the couple will miss this year’s celebration.

Grizz got sick so the red mantle had to be put on hold for a while. When asked by the Secret Santa team if it was because of COVID, Grizz just replied that it’s that and other “health issues”.

Christmas has always been their favorite part of the year, and now, they’ve missed it two years in a row.

To cheer them up, the Secret Santa team readied a surprise for them.

In Eastern Idaho, an anonymous character donates thousands of dollars annually to individuals with incredible stories.

With the help of East Idaho News, the couple’s story reached the Yuletide benefactor.

The team knocked on the door and it was answered by a curious Andrews.

The team introduced themselves as elves working for the “real Santa”. And from one Santa to another, they presented him with two little boxes.

Upon opening, Andrew and Susan were stunned by what they received.

It might be two small boxes, but what they contained was far bigger than they could imagine. The boxes contained two slips of paper. Not just any slip, however, because the two pieces of paper are actually checks amounting to a staggering $15,000.

The couple was left in tears.

And as much as they want to give in to their disbelief, the team insisted that it’s a gift both of them deserved.

The couple didn’t say how they’ll use it but hopefully, it can help them with the hospital bills so that they can both go back to what they do best – spread the holiday cheer.
