We hold high regard towards our fathers, and we set the standards we look for in a man based on how our fathers who their love and affection towards our mothers and us. They were our first love and prince charming.

That is why their presence is essential on a woman’s wedding day.

It’s not just about walking down the aisle with their father or that symbolic “handing over” to the husband. It is also about seeing that once-baby girl he held on to his hand become a full-grown woman.

Hailey Carvey did not grow up with her father but had her grandpa as her father figure.

She called Jose Guzman “papa,” and said that the best thing that ever happened in her life was her childhood with him. Her childhood memories were filled with the fun times her grandfather was by her side.

Fast forward to 2022, Hailey grew up as a young woman and was about to get married.

When her then-boyfriend, Ethan Carvey, popped the question, she had no doubt she would say ‘yes.’ The couple had everything planned out – the date, theme, even the guest list. Of course, Hailey wanted her Papa to be there.

Then, the couple received heartbreaking news.

Jose’s cancer in his prostate spread to his liver and up to his spine. The chemotherapy treatments also stopped being effective, thus, the devastating effect on his body.

Hailey was hell-bent on having her Papa at her wedding, and nothing could change her mind.

The news broke her heart because waiting for their initial wedding date in May might be too late for her Papa. She and Ethan talked it over and thought of ways to make it work and have Jose at their wedding.

With the help of the Kalispell Logan Health staff, the couple found a way to make it work.

They moved the wedding up, and within 18 hours, they were able to plan and move all the aspects of their wedding to the ICU. They held the ceremony there so Jose could witness Hailey and Ethan’s wedding.

Hailey walked into the room with her Papa’s hat at hand as a gesture that he was walking her down the aisle. The presider and Ethan were waiting in front of the foot of Jose’s bed so he could witness the ceremony.

It may not be their ideal wedding, but Hailey wouldn’t want it any other way.

“I don’t know what I would’ve done if I didn’t have him there. I would’ve just walked myself with his hat,” Hailey told NBC Montana.

The staff was also happy that they could give the family the help they needed.

“We wanted to make sure that whatever we could do on our end — to have some happiness in this sad time of their life — we wanted to provide that for them,” Jose’s Senior Spiritual Care Tracia Deal at Kalispell Logan Health said in the same interview.

The most important thing was Jose got to witness the wedding of her precious little girl.
