Growing old isn’t easy.
Especially when one’s health starts to deteriorate.
In a touching display of kindness and community spirit, a couple from Sunrise, Esther and Joel Johnson, became the saviors for a 94-year-old woman, Sixta Andinom, who was found lost and without shoes in their yard.
This incident is a poignant reminder of the impact of compassion and the importance of looking out for our elderly neighbors.
The Johnsons were spending a tranquil evening at home when they heard an unexpected knock around 10:30 p.m.
Joel remembers hearing someone say, “hello.”
The unexpected knock at such a late hour made them reluctant to open the door as they weren’t anticipating any visitors.
However, curiosity and concern prompted them to step outside with their dog, only to find an elderly woman, shoeless and struggling on the ground.
Esther Johnson vividly described the distressing scene, mentioning, “Every time she tried to stand up, she’d fall back down.”
Witnessing her difficulties, Joel, with a gentle and reassuring touch, helped her to their front door.
Meanwhile, Esther was on the phone with 911, discovering in the process that Sixta was actually a missing person.
Esther recounted, “We gave the operator the name and that’s when we were able to determine she was a missing person since 10:30 that morning.”
It was revealed that Sixta lived just a few doors away and one of her sons had reported her missing.
The Johnsons felt a sense of relief and contentment for being instrumental in ensuring her safe return.
Esther, pondering her own future, hoped, “I may get to that point one day and I just hope someone will treat me with kindness as well.”
Joel’s thoughts mirrored a universal truth, “To be honest, it’s second nature. You see someone in need, you want to help.”
Their actions are proof of the inherent goodness and empathy in people, showcasing a sense of unity and care within the community.
In Joel’s mind, he only did what any other person would do given the situation.
Following the incident, Local 10 decided to check on Sixta on a Monday evening.
She seemed cheerful but had once again wandered from her home.
When she approached another neighbor for assistance, the authorities were promptly informed.
The responding officers ensured Sixta’s well-being through a welfare check and verified that she had sufficient food and care.
Her son was also notified.
Given Sixta’s age and circumstances, they also deemed it necessary to notify the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Sixta’s son disclosed to Local 10 News reporter Sanela Sabovic that he and his brother usually alternate in caring for their mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, but his brother was currently out of town.
This story underscores the vital role of community vigilance and benevolence, particularly for the elderly and those dealing with health issues, reinforcing the value of kindness and mutual support in our societies.
Sixta is harmless but could find herself in trouble if not looked after properly.
