The Crater of Diamonds State Park experience begins at the park’s Diamond Discovery Center. Here, visitors are taught about diamonds and how to search for them.

“They spent the morning digging dirt and by 11 AM were wet sifting at the North Washing Pavilion in the park’s 37.5-acre diamond search area,” the state park said in an official statement.

After just an hour of wet sifting, they found a large light brown diamond.

“Although most diamonds are found after flipping gravel onto a flat surface, Seth first spotted a metallic-looking gem in the bottom of his screen after an hour of wet sifting. He knew right away it was a diamond, and excitedly showed Jessica,” the state park also said.

State park staff said that about three-fourths of all diamonds discovered at the Crater of Diamonds are found through wet sifting.

Jessica and Seth named the diamond they found HIMO – after the initials of their four children.

The state park shared that the light brown diamond was measured to be 1.90 carats.

They also described to be “about the size of a pony bead.”

Another lucky man, Christian Liden from Washington, also recently found a large diamond in the Crater of Diamonds State Park.

He was traveling around the country looking for materials to build an engagement ring for his future wife.

After three days of mining at the state park, he found a large diamond.

The diamond measured 2.2 carats.

It was the biggest diamond found at the park since the previous month. Liden said that the diamond he found will be the centerpiece of the engagement ring he is building.

While not everyone may be as lucky as the Ericksons and Liden, the state park said that one to two diamonds are found at the park each day.

However, it’s safe to assume that most of them are smaller than what the fortunate miners found.

According to the Diamond Pro, a 2-carat diamond costs $4,200 to $29,000 per carat, depending on different factors, such as cut and clarity.

The photo above shows a sample of how a 2-carat engagement ring typically looks. No matter the cost of the diamonds the Erickson couple and Liden found, they’re still getting great value from the diamonds they found.
