“I think the world needs a little bit more acts of kinds like this. It was a great showing of a lot of [what] law enforcement does across the nation day-to-day that doesn’t get publicized,” Bastianelli told Fox News. “We’re very proud of our officers for stepping outside the box and going above and beyond what they normally do to help our citizens.”
Getting pulled over for speeding is usually a really BAD experience. Nobody wants to get a ticket and handling all the things that come with being pulled over is really the worst. For one man, however, things ended up being positive!
A Michigan police officer recently pulled over an elderly man for speeding but had no idea he was about to make a friend.
The Sterling Heights Police Department recently released a video of the traffic stop. The event happened on September 30th on 18 1/2 Mile Road and Kevin Coates was the officer involved.
Officer Coates pulled over the elderly man named David, a 79-year-old resident of the area.
Asking the man what was wrong, Officer Coates was curious what was causing the man to speed and look so distraught.
“Everything’s going wrong,”
Poor David had recently bought a television for his wife and he was struggling to get it hooked up. As a result, he was really frustrated that he couldn’t get his gift to his wife to work.
“I really try to drive right,” David told the officer. “I bought a new television today because I wanted to make my wife happy, you know, and I can’t get it hooked up.”
David had spent the day going to stores and asking for help, but nobody would help him out.
For a senior who was just trying to get his TV set up, it must have been incredibly frustrating. We all know that speeding is wrong, but in some circumstances, you don’t even realize it!
Generally, aggressive driving is a behavioral expression of the driver’s anger; however, it can also occur when we “zone out,” enjoy taking risks, or feel emotionally distressed. For example, you may be tailgating because you’re preoccupied with your thoughts and not being attentive to your driving. Or, you may be speeding because you like going fast and enjoy the thrill. – Psychology Today
Officer Coates understood that the senior wasn’t tech-savvy and didn’t feel like he knew what he was doing.
Letting him off with a warning, he told the man that he would stop by his house later to potentially help him out! An hour later and David heard a knock on his door and saw the headlights out front – Officer Coates had followed through!
Officer Coates and his friends, Officers Remi Veroughstraete and Jerry Jaushevich, all showed up to help!
The three went inside and learned that David’s wife had a serious medical condition and his son had special needs. Setting up his television was the least they could do. The moment soon went viral as people all over expressed how heartwarming it was that the officers were willing to help.
The officer’s Luiftenant, Mario Bastianelli, praised the men.
