Every once and again you hear a story that warms your heart and reaffirms your faith in humanity. When given the opportunity, there are good-hearted people out there who will go the extra mile to help people in need. We need to celebrate these acts of kindness when they happen.

Kori Malenfant witnessed a tremendous act of kindness.

She was in New York along with her parents. They were there because Kori needed an important surgery. The teenager suffers from Chiari malformation. This is a condition where a person’s brain extends into their spinal cord. Needless to say, it was important that Kori be treated for the condition and that’s why she and her parents had traveled from Maine to New York.

Following her surgery, the family planned to travel back to Maine by Amtrak train.

Unfortunately, poor weather conditions caused a delay in their travel. Their train from New York to Boston was delayed and it caused them to miss their connecting train to Maine. The family would have to wait 2.5 hours for the next one. Making things worse was that the temperature inside the train station was particularly cold. Also, there was no place for Kori to rest her neck.

Kori’s mother approached two police officers.

She asked them if there was somewhere they could store their luggage so that they could go somewhere warm while they waited.

“The officers quickly assured Mom that they would help us by contacting their captain to see what he could do. Shortly after, the Boston police captain came to us and asked us to follow him,” Kori wrote in a Facebook post.

The officer took the family’s luggage to an unmarked police SUV.

The family got into the car as well and assumed that the officer was just going to drive them somewhere to keep warm.

“He pulled into the police station, got gas, and quickly started heading North. We were all pretty confused at this point, and assumed he was going to ride us around a little bit to warm us up,” Kori continued.

The officer didn’t tell them where they were going.

The family was confused and unsure about where they were driving to.

“After quite some time, as we continued moving North, Mom asked where we were going, and he laughed and said he was kidnapping us and that it was perfectly legal. We soon realized he was driving us all the way to Portland, back to our car!”

Driving time from Boston to Portland, Maine is about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The officer was clearly going the extra mile (some pun intended) to help this family get home.

“He said there was no way he was going to allow me to sit in the cold so soon after surgery and that it was his pleasure to drive us. We were all in shock and very emotional at this amazing and generous act of kindness.”

Captain Kelley McCormick is a hero.

The officer had also worked on the Boston Marathon bombing and the ensuing manhunt so he’s no stranger to being a hero. According to Kori and her family, however, he was a very humble man.

“He is a humble, inspiring, kind man. I am blessed and honored to have spent a car ride with such an amazing national hero,” she wrote.
