During these dark times, people are looking for some good news to cheer them up and brighten up their days. Even though it is crucial to practice physical distancing, it is more important than ever that we stay socially close to each other, supporting and encouraging other members of our communities even if we can’t approach them physically.
And this is what a whole neighborhood did a few days ago.
“My daughter, Coco, finished her final chemo treatment yesterday and our friends had a surprise social distancing welcome home parade for her!”
This is what April Danz wrote on her Twitter account, followed by a heartwarming video. In the video, we can see Danz’s daughter in the car returning home after her final chemotherapy session. Waiting for her as she approaches her house are neighbors who are celebrating her return!
The “victory parade” was organized by the girl’s neighbors who gathered at a safe distance from each other- many of them in their cars- to give her a cheer for being a warrior and a brave fighter.
“It was really overwhelming,” Coco, the 15-year-old cancer survivor, told NBC News. “I was just, like, shocked! I was so surprised.”
The mother was so moved by the neighbors’ initiative that she decided to film the whole thing and post it on social media so that it makes someone else’s day, too. The love that these people showed Coco and her family really melted our hearts.
The post has collected more than 66K likes within a week, as well as more than 2K comments. Most people congratulated Coco for her victory, while there were others who shared their personal cancer experiences.
“Well this is one of the greatest things I’ve seen. Welcome home Coco!!” someone wrote, while another Twitter user commented: “As a Cancer survivor, allow me to send a socially distanced hug to you and your daughter!”
Coco’s family and nurses in the hospital prepared a little celebration for her too, singing songs about her victorious battle against cancer all these months that is finally coming to an end.
“The light at the end of the tunnel,” Coco added, “will be there soon, hopefully!”
Indeed, we are wishing this final chemo session signifies the end of this battle and means that young Coco will soon be able to return to her life as she knew it before she started fighting this Ewing sarcoma nine months ago.
But also, this heartwarming story is a reminder that in times like this, when we are all fighting the same battle- some might be more vulnerable, some less, it doesn’t really matter- it is important to remember that we are in this together. We can do everything if we are united, and we should support each other even if it is only from a safe distance.
As they say, crises like the one we are going through bring out the best or the worst in people. Let’s hope it will all be for the best!
