This random act of kindness from different strangers will restore your faith in humanity.
In Almaty, Kazakhstan, a dog desperately clings onto the small space surrounded by a raging torrent of water. He was just inches away from being swept deeper into the canal and he doesn’t know if help will arrive.
That is until a man in a cap slides down on the side of the canal and traverses the knee-deep surge of water.
In the video posted by the well-known animal website The Dodo, a stranger jumped to a dog’s rescue even if it endangered his own life. This amazing footage taken from a canal in Kazakhstan reflected the best in humanity. It has been watched and replayed over 58.5 million times.
It’s not surprising, knowing that this heroic moment is as inspiring as it’s tension-filled.
The young dog got too close to the Sayran reservoir in the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan when it fell into the raging waters. Swimming back to safety is not an option as his small frame can be easily carried away and further downstream. But at the same time, the young pooch couldn’t just stay in the middle of the canal because he could be washed away by the water the longer he stays there.
All he could do is to stay still, hoping that the water could calm down.
It was at this moment the man snatched the dog by the collar and carried him to the edge of the canal. The raging current was difficult to walk through that when both of them reached the slopes of the canal, neither of them had the energy to climb up.
Fortunately, his act of random kindness was hard to miss.
Two men who caught his contagious generosity climbed over the rails as they tried to figure out how they could fish the guy out of the water.
Then, an idea comes to mind. They decided to form a human chain by locking hands and lowering the last man closer to the dog and the first rescuer. In theory, the idea could work. All the man has to do is reach up together with the dog.
But it proved harder than it looks. Already battered and exhausted, he could hardly lift himself together with the dog.
The bank is too steep and their feet are so wet that it’s slippery.
At one point, maybe in desperation, he tried to hurl the dog towards the human chain so they could finally take the dog to safety. Unfortunately, the dog slips back down towards him. The man barely catches him as he dips back into the water.
They tried running up together. He tried leaving the dog at arm’s length before running up to the chain. They tried a lot of things but none of them seemed to work.
It all pointed out one thing – the chain is just too short.
More specifically, it’s one man short.
But good deeds are contagious, and generous hearts are easily susceptible to these spontaneous acts of kindness.
Soon, another man rushes to their aid to fill in the last link to the chain. At first, the bystanders thought that it’s enough to pull everyone out of danger. The addition of the last man was only enough to get the first rescuer out of the water but not with the dog.
It is when two other guys walked into the scene and realized what was happening.
They both climb over the fence to form a more stable anchor, enabling the whole chain to extend fully down to the edge of the concrete slopes.
They successfully pull everyone out of danger, finally ending the tense situation. A few high fives and handshakes went around, but as they probably returned to their businesses, their heroic act was posted for all the world to see.
This video serves as a lesson that we are at our best when we work together for a common kindness. It all starts with one, and a chain of generosity follows.
