A high school prom is one of the iconic traditions to mark the end of a high school senior’s journey. Seniors plan every single moment, including who their date will be, their dress and their after-prom party plans to make this night very memorable.

They’re cautious with choosing who their date is going to be because it’ll cement their high school and post-high school reputation.

And then there are seniors who just want to have fun and would rather go with people they know and trust.

And that’s what happened with Kenzi Miller. She was a popular girl, and head cheerleader, and everybody liked her. She could ask anyone to be her date.

That’s why so many were surprised with her prom date pick.

She decided to ask her friend, 18-year-old Cameron Biagiotti, to be her prom date with a prom-posal.

Although her friends did help her organize the prom-posal, they were very much surprised by her choice.

“They’re not trying to be rude. They just say, ‘You want to take him to your senior prom?,'” Kenzi said. “And I say, ‘Why not?'”

Kenzi understood their reaction because her date, Cameron, has Williams Syndrome, a rare condition that impacts someone’s cardiovascular health and slows development.

Kenzi, who could have asked anyone, chose to ask Cameron to enjoy the prom with her.

“They just accept you for who you are. You don’t have to act a certain way. Everyone can be very open. I can be however I want when I’m with Cameron,” Kenzi shared.

In fact, he’s had such a big impact on her life ever since they became friends in elementary school.x

“That’s when I decided I wanted to be a special needs teacher, in fifth grade,” Kenzi shared.

Cameron loved drums so she asked for help from their school’s drumline and they marched over to Cameron’s house on a Thursday afternoon.

“I just want to play for a drum corps,” Cameron said. “I could be a conductor.”

Cameron’s mom, Rebecca, was bursting with joy for her son.

All she wanted was for him to experience happy moments and she couldn’t believe Kenzi has chosen Cameron as her prom date.

“She is a cheerleader, really well liked. She could have picked anyone to go to prom with,” Rebecca said. “You just want the best for your child and to be accepted. And he is.”

It turns out Cameron asked Kenzi to his own prom, who said yes. And now, it’s Kenzi’s turn to do the same for him.

“It’s really special, it’s emotional, because every special needs parent wants their child to be accepted and liked and to have the same opportunities,” Rebecca Barnhart shared. “It’s emotional, because I want that for a lot of kids. There is a lot of bullying and mean kids, and when you get one, especially like Kenzi that makes a difference in a child’s life, a friends life – says hi, includes them – it’s the greatest thing that a parent could see for her child.”

By the way, Cameron said yes.
