There are so many reasons to look forward to Christmas. Apart from the gifts, good food, and parties, it’s one of the best times to be at home and spend time with family and friends.
For Edwin Holmes, Christmas isn’t as exciting as it used to be.
At 86 years old, he usually spends most of his days by himself.
As a widower, he doesn’t have a partner to spend Christmas with. He just spends the holidays alone, with a frozen meal ready.
His wife died in 2006.
Even though they have a daughter, she’s not staying in the United States.
She’s in Britain with his grandkids. C
onsidering all those things, one can think of Edwin as an orphan for Christmas.
When Ellie Walker heard about the old man’s situation, she decided to do something nice for him.
The 22-year-old works at the grocery store. There, she meets tons of people every single day. It makes her feel happy to be able to talk not just to her co-workers but to the customers too.
As a friendly person, she knew she had to do something for their regular customer.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, she shared:
“He is without a shadow of a doubt my favorite customer. He is the cutest man and so chatty. I thought if it was my granddad and he was alone I would want someone to talk to him.”
Although there’s nothing she can do to change Edwin’s situation for good, she knew she could make his Christmas a little better.
Ellie decided to invite Edwin for Christmas dinner.
And the old man didn’t disappoint his date. He came prepared, making Ellie realize how much her action meant to Edwin. He came so well dressed. He even brought flowers for the young lady.
In the same interview, he shared:
“The dinner made me very happy as it was unexpected and I had very pleasant company. As for the suit, it was my first date for about 55 years, and [I got] the flowers because I wasn’t going to go empty handed.”
After their ‘date’, Ellie and Edwin continue to chat with each other.
Aside from seeing each other at the grocery store, they also meet over coffee every now and then.
For Ellie, it feels nice to be able to chat with the old man.
Edwin, on the other hand, feels thankful for the friendship. He didn’t expect Ellie to do such a thing and that made her even more special to him.
Even though there’s a 64-year age difference between them, they’ve become friends fast.
The Christmas season is one of the best times to be with one’s family. It’s also the best time to do something good for other people.
There’s no telling what each one is going through.
A little kindness goes a long way, particularly for those who aren’t lucky enough to be with their families during Christmas.
