This is a hard time for everyone. People are trying to figure out how to cope with a changing world while at the same time, not getting sick. But perhaps one of the most difficult parts of the coronavirus pandemic is the unemployment. Millions of people are out of jobs, concerned how they’re going to make ends meet.
While some are worried and stressed about money, others are doing what they can to help those in need. Even a little bit of help can go a long way for people who are struggling. That’s why some individuals are going above and beyond.
An Australian café owner is one of them
Pete Darmos owns a café in Melbourne, but he was forced to close it in an effort to avoid spreading the virus. Even though his business took a huge hit, he wanted to do something that would help other people. He knew some were affected by the crisis more than he was. So, he searched for ways to lend a hand.
He saw a heartbreaking news story
Darmos was watching the news when he saw a news story on TV. It was about people lining up outside of social security offices across the city just so they could get food to eat. When he saw that, he knew he had to take action. His goal… to make sure people stayed safe and healthy during these trying times.
Darmos headed to the bank
Instead of just sitting there and feeling bad about the situation, Darmos drove to the bank. He withdrew $10,000 of his money. Then, he started handing out cash to people on the street. Darmos even went as far as giving individuals $100 notes as they were just going about their business. As you can imagine, people were ecstatic.
He explained what he did in a news interview
“I started at the back of the queue and then basically handed everybody a $100 note. There were tears and disbelief. $100 is not a lot of money, but four or five bags of food meant a lot to these people.” His contribution made a huge difference in the lives of many individuals. This extra income made it a little easier to put food on the table.
At first, he wanted to stay anonymous
Before doing this act of kindness, Darmos thought that he wanted to remain anonymous. After all, this was about other people, not him. So, he didn’t want to call any attention to himself. But after careful consideration, he changed his mind. He now says he hopes his good deed will inspire others to do the same.
And they did
When people on the internet saw what this man had done for others, they became inspired. It’s important for everyone to find a way o help their neighbor, friend, or family member during and beyond these trying times. Seeing what this man did on television surely motivated others to act too. Now, Darmos is known as “Generous Pete.”
It just goes to show you how a little bit of care and compassion for others in your community can go a long way. You can see more about this amazing story by clicking on the video below.
