Bus drivers are great for getting you from point A to point B, but they also do other deeds that go unnoticed. While some bus drivers may just drive you safely to your destination, one driver in Virginia saved a little girl’s life.

On a regular day, Kelvin White was driving his route and saw something he didn’t expect.

All alone, standing in the middle of traffic, was a little girl. She was walking around the street and it didn’t look like there was anyone around to look out for her.

Even though there were plenty of other cars just whizzing by her, seemingly without noticing what was going on, White saw the clear danger this girl could be in. So he made the decision to break protocol and stop the bus.

He got off the bus to go help her out.

From his own estimates, the little girl looked extremely young. The scene that he describes is heartbreaking. He tells 3WTKR:

“That’s the first time I had a child that I’ve had to pull out of the street…She was walking with a stroller, with a stuffed animal in it, and she appeared to be maybe about 2 or 3 years old.”

Using his bus driver’s vest, White was able to bring attention to cars driving by so that they diverted their route and didn’t hurt the girl accidentally. From that, White was able to get to her safely.

After reaching the little girl and getting her out of harm’s way, another man showed up to help. Kelvin White did not know him, but they were both invested in getting the girl to safety. The two men walked around the neighborhood with the little girl, trying to find someone who recognized her and could possibly be her parent.

Part of the reason White felt so compelled to help this girl was because he is also a father.

He says:

“It was hard seeing a girl pushing a stroller in the middle of traffic, unattended, no adults in the presence…It was frightening because I’m a father, and I wouldn’t want to find my child out there in about situation.”

After unsuccessfully searching for the girl’s mother himself, White took her to the police station.

There, he waited with her until her mother showed up. With the little girl reunited with her mother, everything started to feel calmer for all the parties involved. Who knows what would have happened without White’s actions!

After a few years of personal struggles, Kelvin White is now being recognized as a hero for his actions.

The last few years have been difficult for Kelvin. Due to some health struggles, ranging from cancer to Covid-19, he had not been able to live his life to his full potential. In the months before rescuing the little girl, his health had finally turned itself around.

So when he went out of his way to save the little girl, he wasn’t expecting much. But, as a thank you for his actions, Kelvin’s boss gave him a free pair of Beats headphones. He also received a People Taking Action Award from WTKR, and a $300 Visa gift card. That’s a pretty great reward for something so selfless!
