After two years of pandemic crisis, everyone knows that not all heroes wear capes. Our heroes over the last months have been doctors and nurses who take care of their patients the best they can.
Similarly, our everyday heroes can be anywhere and anyone- from a taxi driver to a teacher to a bus driver.
Just like Tiffani Lee, a Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) bus driver, who saved a missing girl during her shift.
Lee was driving the 51 bus line just like she did every single day. Nothing looked special about that day, and Tiffani had no idea that she would soon make headlines with her deed.
As she was driving the bus, she spotted a little girl walking on the sidewalk, and she knew something was off right away.
“She was walking by herself and she had on one flip flop and one tennis shoe,” Lee told Fox6.
The fact that the girl was wearing two different shoes was a red flag for Lee, who tried to process the whole thing in just seconds as she was passing past her.
With the temperature at 40 degrees, and the girl wearing no jacket, the bus driver was convinced that she could not have been outside with her parents knowing. After all, there was no adult around.
“I’m a parent, so I knew no parent would let their children out in that kind of weather,” said Lee.
With her instinct guiding her, Lee pulled over and opened the bus doors, inviting the little girl inside.
The girl walked onto the bus hesitantly, but then the driver managed to approach her and gain her trust, as she was calling the police.
“She calmed down because we got to talking about nail polish. She had on pink and I had on Easter purple,” explained Lee.
When the driver asked the girl what she was doing outside, the girl answered that she was going to the store.
This didn’t help Tiffani understand what was going on, but all that mattered at that moment was to calm the girl down and wait for the police to arrive.
West Allis police reached the bus a few minutes later, and an officer was captured on camera talking to the little girl and taking her by the hand, accompanying her to the police station, where she would find shelter until her family was found.
Indeed, the girl’s family was notified and soon the girl was reunited with her loved ones.
The child’s family is grateful to the driver for stopping by to help their little girl. According to WISN 12, she left her family’s home while everyone was asleep. Her aunt, Cheryl Wentland, explained:
“I promised to get her some shoes that weekend, and I think she had it on her mind, and she always says ‘Wait for you by the bus stop.'”
Lee was relieved to find out the wandering girl had returned to her family.
“She was scared and I was just concerned. I’m happy she got home safely,” Lee told FOX6 News.
