Raising a family, especially young children, is not easy.

Every parent knows about this. It takes experience, maturity, and great love for someone to fully support the family without expecting something in return.

Unfortunately, for 22-year-old Jaylan, no one would be able to do this for him and his little brother anymore. Their parents have passed away, and their grandfather who raised them afterward has also passed.

Jaylan had no choice but to be the parent to his younger brother, 12-year-old Julian.

The young man promised his late mother that he will take care of Julian no matter what. It was a promise that he intended to fulfill no matter what.

“I try my best to keep him in check, make sure he doesn’t get in trouble, and make sure he’s loved,” he said.

Losing their loved ones and the elders in their family was a hard blow. But, this was not the end of their challenges, because Hurricane Harvey and the 2021 freeze came around and destroyed the place they call their home.

“At one point, I was just done with the house. I was ready to sell it at one point. It was too much weight on my shoulders. I couldn’t do it,” said Jaylan.

Still, Jaylan fought through life to survive for his little brother.

And finally, God made a way for Jaylan and Julian to start realizing their dreams. Their first wish was to have a decent and comfortable home to live in.

This is when Katy Responds, a local organization, approached Jaylan and Julian to make their wish come true.

“There’s just no way they could’ve lived in it and probably would’ve never fixed it,” said Executive Director Ron Peters.

Katy Responds remodeled the home that Jaylan and Julian were living in.

For the next three months, their home was gradually transformed from an uninhabitable place to a clean and beautiful home. It has changed into a safe place for the two of them to reside.

“I want you to have a safe place to live. I want you to be able to not worry about your home for a few years,” said Peters. “This is what we do. It’s hard work. It’s non-profit work, but it’s why we do it is for those guys.”

Their remodeled home is a huge sign from above that they are now ready to start afresh.

Times have been tough in the past years, but the brothers fought hard to survive, all while making each other strong. Their remodeled home is a reminder that good things come to those who wait.

“It makes me so happy to see that there’s good people. I just like the way we’ve been treated. I didn’t think anything good would happen,” said Julian.
