We have all been teenagers at one point in our lives and thus we know how important are all those social events that take place during the school year for the student body!

And undoubtedly, the Prom Nights are often considered the highlight of the whole year’s social calendar. Boys and girls spend weeks preparing their outfits and arranging their transport for that one night when they will have the opportunity to “out-shine” among their peers.

So, it’s understandable how frustrating it can be, especially for a teenage girl when she cannot have a beautiful dress for that night. According to Yahoo Style’s 2017 Prom Across America survey “between hair and makeup, outfits, tickets, and rides to prom, teens are spending an average of more than $600 on prom”. This amount might be higher than a family’s monthly grocery budget.

Our story today takes us to Zamboanga City in the Philippines, where a school announced its upcoming junior and senior proms. However, the parents of a particular girl couldn’t afford to pay for her prom dress and that’s where her brother stepped in to save the day, or better say “save the prom night”.

Maverick Francisco Oyao seeing his little sister desperate as she really longed to go to the prom, decided to help her out, by designing and making her own “Princess” prom dress!

Seeing his sister in such a sad state, encouraged Maverick to try once more and after browsing different types of prom dresses online, he was able to find the design he was looking for.

Maverick started making the dress with his own hands, using his creative skills. “This was my first day. I was nervous and didn’t know where to start. I cut out 9 pieces of blue fabric, decorated them with a satin ribbon, and sewed them all together to make a skirt”, said the young man.

As you can see in the photos, the creation process seemed quite difficult and time-consuming. However, as a puzzle pieced back together, Maverick created a really magnificent gown!

I painted an ombré blue bodice to fit in with the color pallet of the lower part of the dress. I would come home from school and work on it. Sometimes I’d get extremely tired, but by imagining the outcome, I got the energy to continue the hard work” explained Maverick.

The ball gown really looks like something plucked out from fairytales, with the huge butterfly sleeves and the beautiful skirt trims!

It’s truly magnificent what a love for a sibling can accomplish. Maverick’s parents ought to be genuinely proud of their son as he’s an amazing and generous young man. Without having much and just with his honest hard work, he was able to help his sister attend her dream prom!

Hopefully, Maverick’s story will be an inspiration to the rest of us, encouraging us to be more creative and resourceful when it comes to our dreams!
