The worst events and situations in life often bring out the best in people. In times of tragedy, people band together to help one another. In the wake of the recent hurricanes, this has been shown time and time again.
A woman named Dayna Skolkin was planning on marrying the man of her dreams. However, Hurricane Harvey had other plans.
Dayna had been planning her big day for months. Her and her fiance, Josh Tillis, were excited to start their lives together. Sadly — due to the hurricane, the couple had to postpone the wedding until December.
Without much discussion, the couple knew exactly what they were going to do. They were going to serve food to people who were recently homeless because of the storm. It was the least they could do.
The couple wanted to donate their wedding time to serving food to hurricane victims at a nonprofit that meant a lot to them.
Dayna’s mother passed away five years ago. Before passing, she co-founded a nonprofit organization which is where the banquet for the victims would be held. It was also where Dayna’s wedding dinner would have taken place. So, naturally, this is where Dayna wanted to spend her time to help out in any way that she possibly could.
For Dayna, it was an easy decision to make. “Everyone in Houston is doing everything they can to try to help,” she said. The community came together at the nonprofit building that was miraculously spared from the winds and floodwaters.
While serving displaced hurricane victims, Dayna was informed that she was actually cooking and serving the food she had purchased for the wedding.
Dayna knew she had already bought all of the food, but after canceling the wedding, she wasn’t sure where it was going to end up. In amazing serendipity — it all ended up where it was supposed to.
All of the food ended up feeding around 300 families that were affected by the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. The soon-to-be-newlyweds couldn’t have been happier about their donation that day, even if it wasn’t completely planned.
Dayna’s interview with Inside Edition is below. She doesn’t regret a thing, and she’s truly an inspiration to us all.
