Most brides do everything they can to stay spotless on their special day, steering clear of anything that might stain their perfect appearance. But Gorae, Australia dairy farmer Jessa Laws got down in the mud in her gorgeous silvery wedding gown.

She didn’t slip or fall. She was in the mud helping to bring a new calf into the world. Jessa and Ben had to reschedule their October wedding because of COVID-19 lockdowns.

They ended up having to choose April for their new date even though they knew their cows would be calving around that time. By the time their wedding day came around, their cow named Fleyas Jacot Drama was overdue.

So, the couple had to ask their friends who were also dairy farmers to go in and check on her throughout the wedding festivities.

Everything was going well throughout the ceremony but the reception was a different story.

When their cow went into labor during their reception at their farm, Jessa ran to go help.

“When there’s a cow that needs help calving, you drop everything to go and help,” she told As It Happens. “I didn’t even think about my guests. Didn’t think about my dress, that’s for sure. I headed straight down to the dairy.”

It was about 10:30 p.m. when she got herself down to the barn.

“Those that know me are definitely not surprised,” Jessa told the Victorian Country Hour, according to ABC.net.

“My husband was actually up at the house making cups of tea for people and someone walked in [and told him what happened] and he said ‘Jessa’s down there in the mud isn’t she?’ and they said ‘Yeah’.”

Apparently, they had a premonition that their wedding day would also include a live birth.

“With a name like Drama, we had made the joke that she would no doubt go on our wedding day,” Jessa said. “She was about three or four days overdue by the time our wedding day came around.”

And the birth was a difficult one too.

But eventually, the calf, which was named Destiny, was born.

Once the calf was born and safe, Jessa returned to the party with the bottom of her dress covered in mud.

It was “absolutely trashed from the knee down” but to Jessa “it is only a dress.”

She ended up wearing it until 4:30 am just the same.

“We came back up to the reception and everyone just kind of looked at me, sort of looking at the dress and sort of going, ‘What’s happened?’ she said. “The city people were absolutely amazed. My farming friends were just like, ‘Yep, that’s what we expected of Jessa.'”

It’s actually something that could be expected of both Jessa and Ben.

They bonded over their affection for cows in a pub when they met three years ago.

“We spoke about cows the first night we met at a pub and we haven’t looked back. Not many people can say that their relationship was founded on cows. In his wedding vows, Ben said he’d always let me buy another cow if I wanted to. So it was meant to be.”
