Being the place where things like basketball games, graduation ceremonies and performances happen, let’s not take the school gymnasium for granted. It may not be as pristine or fancy as the auditorium or courtyards, but it more than makes up for with how many memories are made in it.

And to prove that very point, this video here captures one such memory from the far-gone years of 2009. Clearly, this day was a significant memory of someone’s high school years. It’s kind of surreal to think that the people in this video are 11 years older now.

What makes this video so memorable, you ask? I don’t know, maybe it’s the dance team of boys in skirts.

Few are lucky enough to watch the “Powderpuffs” perform in their lifetime.

Few highschool guys can say that they’ve danced in skirts for the whole school. Not the Powderpuffs, though. Most boys won’t even go near a skirt, but most boys aren’t the Powderpuffs. And with them, Carroll High school year of 2009 was a lot more fun.

This performance starts in the revered school gym. Before anything happens, a school official announces their upcoming act.

“This is without a doubt the best performance you will ever see.”

That’s quite the statement to introduce them with! I hope that high praise from him won’t pressure them too much. But I’m sure they’re not nervous in the slightest. Look at the first boy doing this superhero pose in the center. You don’t pose like that unless your confidence is through the roof.

Oh, just you wait.

There’s no sign of the rest of the dancers yet. That is until the instantly recognizable, 2-note, blaring intro to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” fills the air. Then the rest of them make their way into view, zombie-walking to the gymnasium’s center to join their friend.

With audible cheering and screaming in the background, these Powderpuffs show us that they rehearsed. Pulling off the signature Thriller dance steps, in skirts no less, the school loves them. And in case you didn’t notice, the leader is donning a red and black vest to reflect MJ’s own iconic jacket.

Before you can even process what’s going on, the music changes. Now, we’re treated to a mashup of the Cha Cha Slide and Bad Romance. A really unexpected combination, just like high school boys and skirts.

So in a way, perfect for this.

And there’s way more where that came from. Following that brief DJ Casper x Lady Gaga track, the track transitions into its next song. And it’s the most 2009 song you’ll hear all day, none other than Miss Taylor Swift herself.

“You Belong with Me” was released only a year before this video was filmed. While we lived through Red, 1989 and Reputation, and now the debut of “Folklore“, it’s hard not to feel old hearing one of Taylor’s earlier albums.

She still had her curls and country style and was one of the reasons the early 2010s were an iconic time for pop music. It’s nice to see they Powderpuffs get their inner Swifties on.

What a coincidence that these boys wear short skirts and are also cheer captains, no?

The Taylor Swift references don’t end there either. The track seems to abruptly stop, but then one of the guys walks up pretends to be Kanye doing his infamous “Imma let you finish” line. Yep. This is 2009, alright.

Though Taylor isn’t the only successful, powerful woman in their track. Do you hear that iconic beat? It’s the Queen B herself. Another iconic song from the mid-2000s, Single Ladies is a track that everyone knows the dance too, even if they might be too shy to do it.

Not the Powderpuffs, though. They’re long past any levels of shyness.

Confidence is hardly the word anymore. They are determined, and they are basically flaunting at this point. When “Santa Baby” plays next, they all gather round to make room for one of them.

Then he slaps on a Santa hat and does his best to move as provocatively as he can. It looks straight out of that Jingle Bell Rock scene in Mean Girls. They already wore the skirts and danced to Beyonce and Taylor, nothing is past them at this point.

In fact, the brief heavy metal that plays next actually feels weird to hear now. Don’t worry, they’re following it up with “Every time We Touch“, just in case you were missing the girly songs. “Hot Potato” and Miley’s “Party In The USA” follow next.

Having some trouble there, Miley? The track seems broken.

Now it’s time wrap things up and end the show with a bang. And the only way to end a party like this is in true 2009 fashion, with a Jay Sean song. Between 2007 and 2009, your school performances and parties always had either Jay Sean’s “Do you Remember” or “Down” blaring through the speakers.

And what a show this was! The selling point was really the skirts, but the sheer nostalgia trip and laughter were just the much-needed cherries on top.
