Paying off one’s mortgage is one of the biggest challenges of adulthood.
The high mortgage rate is one reason why most people work multiple jobs to keep a roof on their heads. Others would opt for a more affordable living space, but a house is the ideal place when you have a family.
It would take most people years to pay off their mortgage.
Most home mortgages would range from 15 to 30 years. That’s a long time, even if you work multiple jobs. This is why this couple went viral because of how this man paid off his girlfriend’s mortgage.
Shaun Nyland and Cat Keenan are both TikTok content creators.
Cat used to work as a dog walker, while Shaun worked as a sales manager. The pandemic hit their source of income so badly, so they turned their attention to TikTok. They instantly went viral with their fun prank videos. According to Shaun, they dropped their day jobs after they realized they earned more on TikTok than their monthly salary in their job.
He probably saved much of that earning to do this sweet surprise for Cat.
Shaun recorded a TikTok video as he surprised his girlfriend on her birthday. In his video, the couple seemed like they had already started the birthday party at home along with their kids (not seen in the video).
Shaun tossed the house keys to Cat, much to her surprise.
She asked him why he had given it to her, and he explained that since it was her birthday, he wanted to do something special for her. When she didn’t believe what he had just said, he told her to check with her bank.
Cat checked her phone, and surprise was all over her face!
According to Shaun, he wired the money to her bank to pay off her entire mortgage. She now has the home to herself to call her very own. It’s a happy birthday indeed.
At that time, Shaun and Cat were separated.
That was the one fact that made this story viral – both the good and bad. People praised Shaun for still looking after his (then) ex-girlfriend, especially since they have a seven-year-old son. The others, however, were more skeptical, thinking that the guy must be up to something.
Shaun posted another video to explain his side.
In his TikTok video, he said:
“At the end of the day, my girlfriend gave me the best gift any man could ask for by bringing Leo into this world. And I know it was tough for Cat to try and live the same lifestyle we lived, but by herself.”
While what he did was highly commendable, others thought it was rather suspicious.
People thought that the couple did it for the views and likes (hence, earn more on their TikTok videos) or that Shaun was doing this to get back with her ex-love and mother of his son. After all, a few months after this incident, the two got back together.
Whatever his motive was, what Shaun did was extraordinary that only a few could achieve at such young age.
