Tim Urban, a blogger and one of the internet’s most popular writers, has launched a website called Wait But Why in 2013.

It didn’t become popular until Urban began posting data-driven topics. Then in 2016, he caused quite a stir when he made an appearance at the TED Talks to talk about procrastination. More than 37 million YouTube viewers have seen the video so far.

Urban turned his blog into a global movement, and he attracted thousands of patrons including Elon Musk and Evan Williams.

Wait But Why covers a wide range of topics, from why we procrastinate to why we haven’t yet encountered alien life forms. Urban’s website is immensely popular—so much so that Tim can brag with more than 10 million unique visitors per month. Impressive, right?

In an interview with Forbes, Urban explained that he knew nothing about growing a blogging community when he and Andrew Finn first started with the WBW project.

Social media helped Urban a lot, and the content soon became viral.

After graduating from Harvard University, Urban wrote a blog for six years on the side.

It all happened before Urban and Finn came up with Wait But Why. Apart from being a talented writer, Urban loves to draw, and he decided to illustrate some of his texts.

Things began with little, funny stick drawings to bring a visual element to the story.

In the video, Tim says that the worst part about procrastination is the length of time during which you will be fully aware that you’re about to fail. But instead of failing, you have to do something. As he says himself:

“Avoid procrastination. So elegant in its simplicity.”

Of course, things aren’t always that simple—and in 15 minutes, Urban fully explains how to move away from the procrastination habit.

Among other things, procrastination is very unpleasant.

You’ll have to sell yourself short eventually, and you probably won’t be able to choose between Have-To-Dos and Want-To-Dos. Does it feel good to always do what you have to do, and never what you want? No! Sounds like it’s time for some changes. The worst part is when the panic monster kicks in.

Please, check the drawing for the panic monster. It’s hilarious.

When asked about some career advice, Urban said that the most important thing is to think about whether you’ll be a happier person if you work for someone else or yourself.

Now that he puts it that way—yes, it makes a lot of sense. Urban also advises people to read the books of people they admire, to check out what they have to say about their careers.

Finally, Tim thinks that the real key to happiness is to maintain a proper work/life balance.

Those were some really wise words, Tim!

Above all, one of the key takeaways of this video is that the brains of procrastinators and non-procrastinators are different.

Even so, being a procrastinator doesn’t mean you’re destined to be that way forever—and we all have things we put off. Even so, there are ways to change so we follow our dreams more effectively!
