When Bella Smith was seven, a classmate came over and confessed that his family couldn’t afford to organize a birthday party for him.
The little girl, who had not realized how privileged she was until then, was heartbroken.
“I just kind of felt down. I went from happy just to kind of miserable,” she told LEX 18.
The little girl felt thankful for her family being able to financially support her birthday parties, but she also felt sorry for all those little boys and girls who just couldn’t celebrate their birthdays with a proper party because their families couldn’t afford it.
So, she went to her mom, Marlana Evans, a teacher at Bella’s school, and they both came up with an idea.
“The school she attends is a Title 1 school, which means 80% of the population here is impoverished — so we have students that struggle with a lot of things,” Evans told Good Morning America.
Evans, who knows how much other families struggle to make ends meet, wanted to help her daughter put a smile on those kids’ faces.
That’s how the duo decided to launch Bella’s Boxes, a project through which Bella and her mom would create birthday boxes for children coming from financially weaker families so that they could properly celebrate their birthdays.
The boxes come with balloons, cake mix, icing, and sprinkles inside, and they are set up by Bella and her mom. The contents of the boxes are donations from the local community.
Bella couldn’t be happier that the community has come together to support her cause and help community members that need it the most.
The boxes are distributed by the school’s Family Resource Center.
As the girl’s mother explains, Bella has always had a big heart, and she has always been more than happy to help other people.
Bella, whose birthday is on March 26, only asked for more donations for her project in 2019.
She didn’t want much for herself. She was already happy to be offering to the community.
Sadly, the girl had to put her project on pause because of the pandemic, although they already had more than 70 birthday boxes packed.
To that day, she had already distributed 300 boxes to families who couldn’t afford to have a proper party.
Unfortunately, the page that has been created for the project on Facebook has not been updated since, but we are sure that the now teenager keeps on helping those in need, whether it is through birthday boxes or in any other way she can.
The girl has melted hearts with her kindness and people have praised her over the years online.
“So amazing! Thank you for what you are doing! You will make so many kids happy!” someone wrote, while someone else commeted: “You are a true shining light in dark times”.
