In 2008, Thomas Ravaux bought a fixer-upper in the quaint commune of Rozoy-sur-Serre in Aisne, France. Then, he fixed it up and decided to rent it out to make some money.
Of course, anyone who has been a landlord knows that you can’t trust people to take of your property that way you would. But Ravaux had no idea just how bad one set of tenants would be.
Ten years after he bought the home, he went viral for the revenge he sought on the couple that trashed his investment property.
Tenants from hell
Even when you do your due diligence, it’s hard to know what to expect from people you rent to. But it’s doubtful that any background check would prepare the landlord for a couple who would skip rent for months and leave behind such an epic mess.
And while a landlord might be understanding in some cases when their tenants need an extension on a rent deadline, somehow Ravaux’s tenants managed to go 14 MONTHS without paying. It was excuse after excuse.
Finally, they and their 3 children left without warning after living there for a few years. Unanswered phone calls and e-mail messages were the last straw.
But as Ravaux made his way over to the home to see what state it had been left in, he was shocked.
Trashed
The rental property that he had put so much money into and rented without issue for a decade was utterly trashed.
His first clue that something was wrong was when he had trouble opening the door. It was blocked by trash.
He was stunned to find the floors covered in so much trash that they were no longer visible. And perhaps it’s not surprising to know that the kind of people who leave behind such a scene left behind not just dirty furniture but old food.
The family had even brought an outdoor dumpster INTO the home!
They even managed to trash the outside of the home where even more piles of trash lay waiting for someone else to come clean them up.
Ravaux didn’t just get mad, he wanted to get even.
A plan for revenge
Ravaux called his lawyer.
He wanted to teach these former tenants a lesson, but he needed to make sure his plan was legal first. Frankly, we’re surprised he got the go-ahead, but it appears he was entitled to do what he did next.
Technically, he was just returning their stuff.
Special delivery
The landlord realized he wasn’t going to get any money out of these folks – they clearly had issues that prevented them from living responsibly. But he at least expected they would take their things with them.
When they didn’t, he decided to load them onto a dump truck and drop them off right where he felt they belonged – in his former tenants’ new driveway.
That’s right – he literally dumped all of their belongings and garbage right where they could no longer avoid it.
It’s unclear whether or not he loaded up the trash and animal excrement they left behind on his floors.
But other items he did return, such as stuffed animals and boxes of belongings he was surprised to see they left behind.
After all, these things would all need to be removed anyway so he could deep clean and repair the home for any future tenants – they had gone so far as to leave huge holes in the walls as well!
Going viral
Ravaux painstakingly photographed the disaster the tenants left behind, but also his revenge.
Posting photos of the full dump truck to Facebook, people were shocked to see the video of it all being dumped into the family’s new driveway.
There is a hefty fine for dumping trash in public places in France, but Ravaux took precautions to explain to the authorities why he had done it. It’s unclear if the fine was levied under the circumstances.
There wasn’t much follow-up on the reaction. After all, these tenants had done some disgusting things, but they had children and clearly weren’t in a good place mentally. And since Ravaux got his revenge, that’s where the story ends.
