When you think of sculptures, what comes to mind? We think of grand replicas of famous people made of marble and stone, standing several feet higher than a normal human.
But have you ever seen a sculpture so small that it can show you, quite literally, that it is indeed easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle?
Dr. William Wigan MBE is well known for his micro-sculptures.
In the span of his career, he has made micro-sculptures from different points of interest like engagement rings, sports icons, literary and historical icons, a line of camels, a yacht, animals, and
even buildings.
He even replicated the scenes from The Wizard of Oz or the sailing of the Titanic! So did he create all of these tiny sculptures with great detail?
Wigan said everything started when he was just a boy.
He was diagnosed with ASD at age 50 but he said that it was already apparent when he started going to school. He said it wasn’t a disability. He just saw and learned the world differently.
A sight of an ant inspired him to create his art because he thought back then that ants are homeless. Then, with whatever implements he had, he spliced and glued together his first micro-sculpture – a simple house.
Wigan said his mother then inspired him to continue honing this uncanny talent.
“My mum would always say that there are diamonds in the dustbin, meaning people would throw them into the bin and not realize what’s in there until they’ve taken the lid off and realize they’ve thrown a diamond in there, and that’s what autistic people are, they’re diamonds,” he said to an interview with BBC.
However, he also described his sculptures as “maddening” because he worked on them 16-17 hours a day. Most of the time, he even burns the midnight oil.
Besides patience, Wigan said his sculptures also helped him become much more of what his body can do. One of the hardest parts, he said, was to synchronize his movements with his heartbeat.

He currently holds the world record for the world’s smallest sculptures made by hand.
His smallest one is a 24-carat gold motorcycle. Then, he beat his previous record by creating a sculpture of a human embryo using carpet fiber.
He made The Last Supper where Jesus and his disciples were almost the width of a human hair. He even presented the late Queen Elizabeth II with a replica of her crown.
His artwork is on display under microscopes.
He is also selling some of his artwork where a piece could fetch up to a million pounds. His work, The Golden Dragon is pegged for $1.2 million.
Meanwhile, Mount Rushmore is priced at more than $130,000. He also created a replica of Ant-Man which was displayed during the movie’s premiere back in 2015.
