Having survived a life-threatening disease at such a young age, this teenage boy proves he’s one heck of a fighter. He’s one heck of a hero too.
This is thirteen-year-old Adeola “Abraham” Olagbegi from Mississippi.
His story began in 2020 when he was diagnosed with aplastic anemia.
What does aplastic anemia do, exactly? Well, nothing good. The condition happens when your body can’t make enough new blood cells.
Without that blood cell production, you become extra-vulnerable to a variety of nasty things. Excessive bleeding, regular fatigue, a lot of bruising, and so on.
Abraham had to deal with this at the age of twelve.
What the boy needed was a bone marrow transplant, which he received in November of 2020.
That operation saved his life, and you bet he’s incredibly thankful for it. He got hope and a second chance thanks to some compassionate, helping hands.
Now, the boy is taking what he experienced and growing from it. He’s been through something most of us will never have to experience, and he knows how much help matters.
Abraham wants to return the favor to the world.
And he knew just how to do it.
Like many young people who develop severe medical conditions, Abraham had won a wish from the Make A Wish Foundation. He could choose something like a trip to Disneyland or a PS5.
Just those two possibilities would win over any kid, but Abraham isn’t just any kid. He’s got the heart of a survivor, and those kinds of hearts are full of compassion.
He used his Make A Wish gift to feed the homeless in his area for nearly a year.
The boy was on the road to a full recovery anyway, so he didn’t need another wish. On the other hand, a lot of homeless folks in Mississippi couldn’t guarantee they’d have enough food for the day.
This actually isn’t unprecedented for Abraham and his family.
They’ve fed the homeless in their town for as long as they remember. Abraham’s just doing what he’s always done.
“It was always a good thing to do, and that’s what I grew up doing that. So, I go back to my roots to dowhat I was taught to do.” – Abraham said
At just thirteen years old, Abraham taught us something that usually takes people years to learn.
“Most of the homeless people you know, they had good childhoods. And you just don’t know one day you could be homeless.”
And to close things off, here’s a priceless bit of wisdom from the selfless thirteen-year-old.
“Before you put your nose in somebody else’s business, put your heart in their place first.”
