The world is now a very different place for elderly folks who are struggling to stay one step ahead of a deadly pandemic that seems to favor people from their age group more than any other.
But, that didn’t stop one brave 93-year-old man from sticking out his thumb and hitching a ride.
Mike Cain was on a hero’s quest to score something sweet for the love of his life, and this Air Force vet wasn’t about to let anything stop him from winning the prize!
It’s not every day you see a 93-year-old man with a walker thumbing for a ride during a global pandemic. Given the current state of affairs, why was he even risking his life by being outside?
That’s exactly what Richard Farmer wanted to know when he saw a vulnerable-looking senior standing by himself on a street corner near a Lake San Marcos, California retirement community.
Richard didn’t know it at the time, but he was about to discover just how much power this thing called chocolate can hold over otherwise rational people.
Richard had just left his real-estate office to grab a quick bite to eat at home when he spotted the oldest hitchhiker he had ever seen.
In a Facebook post, he explained:
“I paused made a u-turn and went back to see if he needed some assistance. I stepped out of my car yelled over the top if he was ok and he said he was trying to get to the 99 cent store about 1.5 miles away.”
At first Richard thought that maybe senior was just trying to get a lift to the grocery store for some food, so he sprung into action and offered him a ride.
“I had him step up on the curb, I pulled my car over and spent 15 minutes wiping down the handles, seats, dash boards, etc with my Clorox wipes. Put on my trusty blue gloves and mask gave him some hand sanitizer and off we went.”
What Richard didn’t know was that Mike was actually in search of a very specific food group, one that many simply can not live without!
Richard made some small talk with Mike, asking him how old he was (93), if he was married (yep, to 94-year-old Doris).
When he asked Mike if Doris knew he was gone, the cheeky reply was:
“Nope, she probably hasn’t even started looking for me yet.”
As for why they were going shopping at the 99 Cents Store, well, that had everything to do a sweet ritual Mike and Doris have been sharing every single night for the past twenty years.
“My wife and I like to share a Hersey chocolate bar every night and we’re out so I need to buy 35 Hersey bars.”
They don’t eat the whole bar, though. They savor the decadent richness by only indulging in a couple of pieces at a time.
Richard quickly hustled Mike in and out of the store, and got him safely back home to his wife.
“I asked what he was going to tell his wife about where the chocolate came from and he said he was going to tell her he met this real nice real estate who gave him a ride.”
After he dropped him off at home, Richard gave Mike his card, and said that he could call him anytime he needed a ride to the store.
“I gave him my card and said next time to need some chocolate no need to try and hitch ride, just give me a call and I look forward to meeting Doris.”
As for Mike’s wife Doris, she wasn’t too worried when her husband disappeared. This wasn’t the first time Mike had hitched a ride to get food.
But now that he had 35 bars of chocolate in his pocket, they would be staying indoors for a while to share some of that sweet love!
