Parents will do anything to protect their kids.
As parents, we should be able to get out children away from harm’s way and cultivate them in a place where they are safe and comfortable.
But sometimes, we find ourselves in situations where kids prove that they’re more than what meets the eye.
One girl surprised her mother with her bravery during a scary encounter.
It happened last November at West Palm Beach. A surveillance video captured a crime as it unfolded. Danielle Mobley was with her daughter Journee Nelson.
A hooded figure was watching them from afar as they walked out of the grocery store. As they made their way back to the car, the suspect sprinted towards them.
The man attacked Mobley.
She was putting their groceries into their car when the man tried to grab her purse. As Mobley attempted to fight him off, the man allegedly threatened the mother. He demanded that she let go of the purse or “you’re going to make me pop you.”
Taking no chances and not wanting for her or her daughter to get hurt, Mobley chose to let go.
“We struggled over the purse. He pushed me down to the ground,” Mobley recalled to WSVN of the parking lot incident. “That is when I let it go and figured he would take off.”
Just as she let go of her bag, a person attacked the robber.
She is small but definitely packs a punch – quite literally. When Journee saw her mom being attacked, she rushed towards the attacker and began hitting him. The whole scene was captured on CCTV where she threw a flurry of punches.
“I fought back,” Journee told WSVN. “I had to save my mom.”
And saved her she did.
The robber broke off and she chased him for five blocks. Bystanders also rushed to the area to help them the mother and daughter.
Two days later, the police caught and arrested Demetrius Jackson. He has since been charged with robbery and battery.
Mobley was grateful and proud.
“I’m very proud of her that was her initial reaction,” Mobley told WSVN, adding, “I wish, sometimes, things could be a little different because she is still dealing with this mentally.”
For her actions, the West Palm Beach Police Foundation presented her with a medal and a certificate. And while her efforts are not recommended, they still considered it heroic.
“I wouldn’t recommend that you confront an individual like that but in the heat of the moment things happen,” said Chief Frank Adderle said in a press conference.
Mother and daughter feel safe now that the suspect was apprehended.
Chief Adderley also commented on Journee’s fighting skills and cited her bravery in the face of adversity.
“I bet he was shocked when she kicked him right in the face because he definitely could tell on the video that he was not expecting that, and her actions were perfect timing in this particular situation, and I think she hit him pretty hard,” Chief Adderle said.
Great things come in small packages, and sometimes, they will make you regret your crime.
