Although most interactions with your food delivery driver are fast and fairly anonymous, sometimes you get given food by someone you can just tell is a good person.
And although our food delivery drivers come from all walks of life, you’re never expecting to open up the door and see and elderly person.
When Carlos Valdez noticed that his pizza was delivered by someone who should be well into retirement, he formed a bond with the sweet older man. Then, he changed his life.
Derlin Newey is not your average delivery boy.
He’s really more of a delivery man. Derlin Newey is 89-years old and he spends his time delivering pizzas for Papa Johns.
Although he does receive some Social Security benefits, he says that they are not enough to cover his costs of living, so he took on a side job.
“Hello, are you looking for some pizza?” is Newey’s charming catch phrase on the delivery circuit.
He works hard and he’s found a way to make his work endearing to people.
A TikTokker loved his interactions with Newey so much he had to record them.
Carlos Valdez and his wife order pizza from Papa Johns a lot. Eventually, they started getting Newey as their delivery driver.
They loved when he would come to their house so much that they even started requesting him by name when they ordered pizza.
They think that his kindness is really special.
So much so that they recorded him delivering pizza to their house.
Once they posted that video on TikTok, Valdez’s follower count went up. People loved watching videos of Newey, and each one got thousands of views.
People were pretty upset someone as old as Newey was still working.
Although many TikTok users loved the video of Newey, many people pointed out that someone his age should be enjoying their retirement, not out delivering pizzas.
“Somebody at that age should not be working that much,” Valdez told KSLTV, in agreement with the online viewers.
Valdez and his wife decided to do something extra nice for their favorite delivery person.
Given that they had a pretty big following on TikTok, the married couple figured that they could get people to do something really kind for their hardworking friend.
So they launched a donation drive, through Venmo.
Thinking they would get a handful of dollars, they asked their followers to contribute what they could in order to give to Newey.
Turns out, their followers appreciated Newey more than they realized.
In total, the drive raised over $12,000.
All that money was going to Newey. When they got to Newey’s house, he was beside himself with the kind gesture.
In a reversal, Valdez decided he would go deliver this treat to Newey’s house.
A camera crew came with them and Carlos knocked on the door of the man who brought so many people joy.
When Newey opened the envelop with the money in it, his jaw dropped. After a few moments he started saying thank you, and he was visibly emotional by what the Valdez’s had done for him.
The pizza deliverer who brightened so many people’s days with his sweet saying was at a loss for words.
