Are you among the millions who need to wear glasses every day? Life in the four eyes club isn’t always easy. Glasses get foggy, they get smudged, and sometimes they even get lost. Luckily, there are still quite a few things that you can do to make life with glasses a little bit easier. We’re sharing our top forty-five.
Let’s get started!
#1 Stop fog with shaving cream
Wash your glasses with shaving cream. It will create a protective layer and prevent fogged up glasses.
#2 Find your glasses with your phone
If you can’t find your glasses, use the magnifying function on the camera on your phone. It will make everything a whole lot easier to see.
#3 Use your pointer finger
If you can’t find your glasses, curl your pointer finger. Look through the “O” made by it and your thumb, and things will actually look a little clearer. The key is in how it helps the eyes to focus.
Never wash glasses with hot water. It can destroy any coating.
If you have a ton of glasses and can’t find all the cases, hang them on a hanger together. You’ll always be able to find them.
#6 Use a bar of soap to prevent fogging
If your glasses are prone to getting fogged up, there’s a simple solution. Rub them with a bar of soap and then wipe it with a soft cloth. The next time you’re in a situation that should fog your lenses, your glasses will remain clear.
Rather than having to get a prescription pair of sunglasses, buy wraparounds to fit over the pair of glasses you already have. That’s money saved!
Check in the mirror to make sure that your glasses are straight. Small adjustments can be made to the frame while they are still on your face.
#9 Use eye shadow primer to prevent slipping
If your glasses are always sliding down your nose, put a dab of eye shadow primer where your glasses sit on your nose. You won’t have to keep pushing up your glasses after that.
#10 Stop glasses from sliding with hair ties
If your side pieces aren’t doing their job, wrap hair bands around them, so there’s something to keep your glasses on your ears. They’ll stay right where they should.
#11 Make your own lens cleaner
Does lens cleaner seem ridiculously priced? It is. Make your own DIY cleaner in an empty spray bottle with a ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol and 1/2 a cup of water. Add a few drops of dish soap in and gently shake.
#12 Invest in lens cleaning wipes
They are simple to use and easy to carry. What is there to lose?
#13 Use a rubber band to find the shampoo
Most of us don’t wear glasses in the shower. It wouldn’t do much good anyway. If you have trouble telling the shampoo from the conditioner without some serious squinting, put an elastic around the shampoo for easy identification.
Have you noticed dents in your nose from the nose pads, or are they just uncomfortable? You can order softer nose pads online or ask your optometrist to switch them out for you.
#15 Use glow in the dark tape to find your glasses case
Do you struggle with finding your glasses when it’s dark? Add a strip of glow in the dark or reflective tape to the top of the case.
#16 Get the right coating
When you get your glasses, it’s worth paying a little extra for what you need. There are a variety of coatings that can help to prevent scratches, protect your eyes from UV damage, and more.
#17 Use the table to straighten glasses
If your glasses start to seem a little crooked, place them on the table to see if they really are. Adjust them while they’re on the flat surface, and you’ll achieve symmetry once again.
#18 Adjust your headphones for comfort
Wearing headphones with glasses can become uncomfortable quickly. Add extra foam to help reduce pain.
#19 Skip on using your shirt to clean your glasses
While it may seem convenient, it’s not a good idea. The material may scratch the glasses or leave behind dirt and oils.
If you have scratches that need to be filled in, Lemon Pledge might be your solution. Just rub it into the scratch and buff the rest away.
#21 Don’t use window cleaner
While it may seem like a practical way to clean glass, it’s too harsh for glasses and may strip the protective coating.
#22 Use castile soap on coated lenses
If your glasses have an anti-reflection or UV coating, use castile soap to clean them without damaging anything.
#23 Use toothpaste to remove scratches
If your lenses are scratched up, get out a nonabrasive toothpaste. Buff it into the lenses in a circular motion with a soft cloth. After rinsing, your lenses will be a hundred times better.
#24 Wash any microfiber cloths regularly
Microfiber cloths can only really clean your glasses if they are clean too. Make sure to hand wash them frequently.
If you’re worried about taking the DIY approach, get a scratch kit at the store. It’s (usually) optometrist approved.
Try a spritz of citrus cleaner the next time your glasses get really snudged. Or better yet, create your own DIY solution by adding a few drops of dish soap to the cleaner.
#27 If you have nothing else
Simple soap and water will help with getting dirt and smudges off glasses. Use a microfiber to dry them off and remove any leftover dirt.
#28 Get lenses extra clean with rubbing alcohol
Use it with a microfiber to remove built-up dirt from lenses and frames. Wipe dry and enjoy.
#29 Skip on cleaning glasses with vinegar
It may seem like a safe enough cleaning product. After all, it’s natural. However, it’s still too harsh for glasses.
#30 Use brass polish for scratches
Use an acetone-free brass polish to get rid of stubborn dirt and to reduce the appearance of scratches. They’ll be as clear as the first day you wore them.
#31 Buff with baking soda
Use a baking soda and water paste to buff scratches out of glasses. Just be gentle when you do it!
If you are looking for a gentle solution for getting glasses clean, baby wash is a good option. It’s one of the gentlest soaps out there.
If your glasses are scratched, buffing them with car wax may help to diminish those lines. It’s a simple solution.
#34 Stop glasses slipping with wax
Apply wax to the nose pads on your glasses. It will give them extra grip, so they’re less likely to slip down your nose.
#35 Keep your hard-earned cash
Just because you get your prescription from an optometrist does not mean that you have to buy the glasses there too. Take that prescription and use one of the more affordable prescription glasses options online to save a ton of money.
Some waxes are actually made specifically for glasses. Nerdwax is a popular choice for preventing glasses from slipping.
#37 Use puffy paint to find your glasses
Add a line of glow in the dark puffy paint to your glasses case. The next time you need to find it in the dark will be easy.
#38 Use diluted dish soap
Dish soap is one of the safest things to use to clean glasses. It also does a really incredible job.
#39 Tighten the hinges to straighten your glasses out
If one of the arms opens more widely than the other, you’re unlikely to ever have a perfect fit. Adjust the tiny screws in the hinges until both arms are the same.
Picking out the perfect frames can be overwhelming when faced with the hundreds of them available at the optometrist’s office. Learn what styles you like ahead of time, and the decision will be a lot easier to make.
If your glasses are uneven, experiment with bending the arms. Soon enough, the glasses on your face will be aligned again.
#42 Adjust your nose pads outwards
If your glasses are pinching, pushing the nose pads further apart is an easy solution. Try it before anything else.
#43 Adjust your nose pads inwards
If your glasses fit too low on your face, there is an easy fix. Squeeze your nose pads closer together until the fit is more secure.
#44 Get your glasses adjusted
Frames can bend out of shape over time. Luckily, optometrists are experts at getting them back into shape.
#45 Get extra microfiber cloths
They’re the best thing for cleaning glasses. Never find yourself without one.
