Just because people pass away and they are no longer with us, it doesn’t mean that their sense of humor can’t live on forever. Our loved ones can leave us with wonderful memories and times of laughter. They can also leave us with hilarious tombstones.
These hilarious epitaphs on tombstones and headstones show that silliness and humor can live forever.
Throw any political correctness out the window when reading these!

1) Oops! Sorry, Janet!
Although Janet M. has left the planet – her sense of humor is still alive and kicking. Just be careful when you go to visit her and pay your respects – you’ll want to watch where you’re standing or you could be causing her a bit of discomfort.
2) No one wanted to listen and then look what happened.
This anonymous person is playing a bit of a passive aggressive role once they crossed to the other side. We might not know who this person was but we’re fairly certain is was someone who liked to say “I told you so” quite often. Regardless, we appreciate the humor.
3) That’s a deep love right there.
If you’ve ever lived in a household with multiple siblings (sisters, at that!), then you know that bathroom vacancy (or the lack thereof) can cause serious drama. We applaud this parent for having the patience and sanity to deal with that. Plus, we commend them for letting the world know about the hardships they’ve endured.
4) Just laying there for all eternity.
Well, they’re not entirely sure what happens to their soul at this point, but what they do know is that they’re looking pretty darn great in that box six-feet-below. At least they died knowing that they were dressed to the nines for whatever may come their way.
5) Death meets art deco.
Once your dead, I suppose it’s important to have a little fun and embrace your ‘deadness’. This person wanted to have their headstone be quite the statement piece of the cemetery. I wonder what it was like to design this contemporary piece with the artist – now that’s an interesting conversation.
6) The voice of many Looney Tunes characters. RIP.
Okay, so this isn’t a funny tombstone but it belongs to one of the funniest men in entertainment. Mel Blanc was the voice of iconic characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Speedy Gonzalez, and Foghorn Leghorn just to name a few. His incredible talent will live on forever but he will be sorely missed.
7) Subtle move, John. Well played.
We’ve got another wise guy on our hands with this tombstone. The passive aggressive game with this one is strong – but subtle. However, instead of the deceased being the one giving the jab – it appears to be his friends! It sounds like John was loved, but they also want him to know he’s kind of a jerk for leaving too soon.
8) It sure does.
Edith isn’t here to sugarcoat anything for you and she likes to tell it like it is – even if it’s from the heavens above. We’re certain that Edith’s 50 short years on this planet were full of wisecracks, jokes, and a lot of laughing. Her friends and family must miss her dearly.
9) It’s pitch black when you’re six feet under.
Here’s another realist that some might have called Captain Obvious while he or she was alive. Some people want sentimental and emotional things written or etched on their tombstones – others want to keep things a bit more lighthearted. Instead of crying, I suppose it’s better to laugh?
10) Getting a little kinky back in the 1800s.
We don’t know if this was intentional or not but we’d sure like to believe that it was. With a last name like Spanks, it’s hard not to have a little fun with it. And why not continue that fun with your wife even in the afterlife? I hope Arthur and Katherine know how many people they’ve made chuckle over the years.
11) Prevent bathroom mirrors from fogging up
The next time your significant other, family member, or friend is complaining about something ailing them – you might want to listen. The woman is proof. Did her friends and family just think she was making it up? Sounds like her poor feet truly became the death of her.
12) Sharing her delicious cookies from beyond the grave.
If this isn’t the sweetest tombstone you’ve ever come across then I don’t know what would be. Whoever this mom was, it sounds like she must have made some of the best cookies on the planet. Thankfully, her family was kind enough to share it with anyone who passes by. She was probably a very sweet and caring lady.
13) Yeah, it’s not the best.
Although it sucks to be them right now, because, you know, you’re alive and reading this – if there’s one thing we all have in common, it’s our mortality here on earth. So, hopefully this person can cheer up while on the other side knowing that we’ll all be joining them sooner or later.
14) Alrighty then. Sounds like Herman got screwed.
Woah. Sounds like Herman was a pretty jaded man before he passed – but can you blame the poor guy? He wanted to make sure that the entire world, for the rest of eternity, knew what a terrible person his wife was. I mean, Eleanor – did you have to be so cruel to the guy? In case she does make her way to heaven – I hope their paths don’t cross.
15) Every family has their own weird language.
This man’s name is unknown but it’s obvious that he was an adoring and funny father and grandfather. If there’s anything anyone should ever leave behind on this planet, it’s a bunch of positive and wonderful memories for the family they left behind. We’re sure that all of his skidaderones and skiddley jiddleys have many of them.
16) This was fate right here.
Have you ever seen a more serendipitous juxtaposition in your life? We think you’d be hard pressed to see a coincidence as funny as this one. These two families definitely didn’t know each other whilst alive but now they’re resting side by side in total harmony.
17) “My great grandfather’s headstone. I have never met him, but I wish I had.”
If you don’t have something smart or interesting to say, Joseph Stock doesn’t want to hear it. His grandson posted this photo of the tombstone and wishes he had met the man while he was still alive. His grandson can be certain that he was a tough man with a great, cynical sense of humor.
18) For some reason, this seems okay given the time period.
If you’re not familiar, Robert Clay Allison was a cattle rancher, cattle broker, and gunfighter in the old American Wild West. He had a reputation of violence and became quite infamous when he rode his horse through town while completely nude – wearing only his gunbelt. He even shot himself in the foot at one point in time.
19) Forever a part of the Labor Union.
If you or anyone you know is part of the Labor Union, then you know how loyal and proud they are of that fact. This couple is taking their political beliefs to the grave – literally. Whichever Labor union they belonged to, they must feel very honored about their undying loyalty.
20) Is this the only way out of debt?
Oh, credit cards. You gotta love ’em and you gotta hate ’em. If not used responsibly, you could be paying those babies off until the day you die…like this departed couple. Hopefully the two of them purchased some fun vacations and made some good memories with all that debt
21) It was that one last bad mistake.
Sounds like this person was a real risk-taker and we respect that. After all, are you really living unless you’re doing things that scare you or make you uncomfortable? Of course, there’s always the risk of something going horribly wrong and you could end up dead…
22) Thank you for the morbid reminder.
We mentioned it earlier and we’ll say it again – it’s inevitable. It might be a bit scary to think about, but yes, we’ll all move on from this planet at some point. At least this person, with quite the punny nickname, has a sense of humor about the entire thing. Let’s be more like them.
23) So not as cool as a pyramid.
This person has a very large ego or some seriously high hopes. One thing’s for sure, they didn’t get the pyramid they had hoped for. One thing that is happening, however, is their lasting sense of humor and that’s even better than a pyramid.
24) Finally! And it’s all yours!
Living in a touristy, congested area with heaps of people coming in and out – parking can be the bane of one’s existence. Clearly, Georgetown must be one of those towns and the Ivison’s can finally rest in peace knowing that they never have to search for another parking spot again. I’m sure many in the area are quite envious.
25) Samuel wasn’t someone to mess with.
Okay, Samuel seems that he was a total badass when he was alive. I mean, seriously – could you imagine the life stories that this guy had to tell? Anyone who walks by and reads this tombstone has to have some serious respect for a guy like Samuel. Talk about a patriotic American.
26) I have a feeling he used this joke a time or two throughout life.
If John ever had an injured foot or was too tired from a long day, we can just imagine that he’d use this dad joke to his own delight and amusement. We have to hand it to him though, it’s a top-quality dad joke that is good for a painful chuckle or two.
27) Right? Where’s our say in this?
Now this is a thought-provoking tombstone right here. And you have to admit, they’re not wrong. Life is a funny, beautiful, and miraculous thing, isn’t it? One day we’re born into this work and a short lifetime later, we leave it. Many ask what’s the point or what does it all mean? I suppose that’s up to you.
28) And that’s all that really matters.
It sounds like Walter may have had a few vices in his day but it sounds like he lived life the way he wanted to live it – and you can’t argue with that. It’s unsure what got him in the end but Walter’s loved ones wanted it to be known that he was a man that died happy. And we respect that.
29) Putting smiles on people’s faces for years to come.
Because all of us have that inner child still in us, it’s impossible not to oblige by this tombstone’s request. This funny person went their whole lives with a name that was certainly the ‘butt of jokes’ all the time, but it looks like they embraced their Butt namesake and are going to make people smile for a very long time.
30) You should have let it go to voicemail, Kim.
I’m not sure what’s funnier about this tombstone – the saying or the hilariously adorable photo of Kim literally picking up and holding a telephone as if she’s answering Jesus’ actual phone call. It’s too hard to decide so we’ll just say this tombstone’s humor is top notch. Well done, Kim.
31) They’re just rubbing it in our faces.
What really happens when we die?! We are all dying to know (quite literally!)! This person know holds the answer to the most mysterious question to ever exist and now…they’re going to taunt us about it. So, I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out for ourselves.
32) More food recipes please!
Here’s another woman who blessed the world with her yummy treats – this time, it’s fudge! We imagine Kay was the type of person to light up a room the moment she walked in – with a plate of homemade fudge, of course. Now everyone can remember Kay fondly while they’re whipping up a batch of chocolatey goodness.
33) A long, eternal sleep.
Joan Hackett was a famous actress who starred in roles such as Catherine Allen in Western Will Penny and Christine Mannon in Mourning Becomes Electra. Sadly, she passed away in 1983 from cancer but her funny personality will always be remembered when you look at her epitaph in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
34) Crazy cat lady til the very end.
There’s typically a negative stereotype about the woman who lives by herself and owns a lot of cats. But Susan? She could care less about that negativity because she’s owning her destiny and not afraid to tell the world about her love of cats and that cat-lady lifestyle. Way to go, Susan. Way to go.
35) No, really. Like right on him.
The Jackson family likes to make others feel welcome and comfortable – they really go out of their way to do so. In fact, they want you to be so darned pleased and happy that they’re willing to let you take a load off right on top of them. They seem like a sweet and selfless family that just keeps on giving even when they’ve gone.
36) It really isn’t the most ideal scenario.
Sorry, Mitchell – it is what it is. And even though you had to go – at least you have a beautiful and funny tombstone to let your memory live on forever. So, yes, although your current situation clearly sucks – you’re still making people laugh from the afterlife and that’s pretty darn cool.
37) We’ll take his word for it.
We’d like to think that if anyone is making moonshine, then they better have some pride in it and it sounds like Garner was the person for the job. He did it and he did it well. Hopefully they passed down their moonshine recipe to the next of kin so that they can have his legacy live on. Cheers to that!
38) So many things happening here.
It’s hard to wrap your head around this one when you look at it. So, let’s get this straight – Gabe is a talented gymnast and also a hardcore AC/DC fan who has an incredible sense of humor? That seems to be what I’m gathering here with this one. Well, Gabe, rock on. We salute you too.
39) Well, that’s good at least.
You know, any time you embark on a new chapter, it’s a bit uncomfortable and takes some time to get used to. I suppose the same would go for death! It’s nice to know that MurpMurphyhere to let us know that it really isn’t all that bad, you know, once you get used to it. So, there’s at least a silver lining to that dark cloud.
40) Some serious sibling rivalry going on here.
Cecil wanted to make sure that she had the last (and forever lasting) word when it came to her brother. We’re going to go ahead and assume that she was probably one of the many people that her brother ‘pissed off’ over the years. Well, at least Cecil can rest in peace and not have to deal with his annoyances anymore.
Which one of these 40 hilarious and clever tombstones was your favorite? Did you prefer the ones with a dark sense of humor? Or maybe the ones that share delicious recipes. Whichever ones you loved, you have to hand it to these people for being great sports about the whole death thing. May they rest in peace and make us smile for decades and generations to come.
