Parents always try to teach their children useful things, like how to eat by themselves, brush their teeth, and read. But there are other, equally significant lessons children need to be taught and sometimes adults set them aside thinking that their kids are too young for them.

One of these other things is how our children should react during an emergency.

A mother in Somerset, New Jersey knows this critical lesson very well, as it helped save her life.

Haley Glaser has a chronic medical condition, so she and her husband taught their older kids what they should do if they ever found themselves in a situation where their mother would need medical help.

The couple’s eldest daughter, Isla, 4 years old, knew exactly what she needed to do when her mother suddenly passed out in the kitchen.

Since Haley was the only adult in the house at the time, Isla needed to take action, and she did.

“She easily could have been scared, and she was faced with a really potentially dangerous and scary situation, but she handled herself with complete and utter control and composure,” Haley Glaser told ABC News.

The little girl stayed calm and called 911. The dispatcher asked her several questions in order to understand what exactly was the emergency, and she kept the girl on the line until help arrived at the family’s home.

“My mommy falled down and she can’t talk,” Isla told the dispatcher.

Then she said that her eyes were closed, she was not sleeping, and that they were in the kitchen.

The woman on the other end of the line reassured the little girl that help would arrive soon.

Indeed, shortly after, the Franklin Township Police Department arrived at the family’s house, where officers realized that the door was locked.

Without hesitation, brave Isla pushed a chair to the door, stepped on it, and unlocked the door for them.

While the officers were taking care of her mom, the toddler fed her younger siblings (2 and 1-year-old) breakfast, while she assured them that “everything would be okay”.

Haley Glaser was taken to hospital, where she stayed for four days and was then sent home to recover.

But officers didn’t just limit to telling Isla some kind words for her deed. The local police department organized an event to celebrate the little girl’s heroic action.

“I know adults that cannot handle this type of an incident with that much bravery, poise, and distinction,” Lt Phillip Rizzo of Franklin Township Police said.

The girl was praised for her “brave and heroic efforts”, and she was presented with numerous gifts, including a pen, a limited edition challenge coin, and a frisbee.

Isla Glaser was also made an honorary junior police officer. She must have felt like a proper superwoman at that moment!
