Performing on stage is not easy.
Performers often report getting a great buzz when performing for an audience. However, it is not for everybody. It takes a lot of courage to get on stage and open yourself up to hundreds or thousands of people.
Some are natural performers
We all have that one friend who can take up the microphone, go on stage and give a smashing performance. Are they born to perform? Our guess is yes.
Some need to conquer stage fright
For some, being in front of an audience is intimidating. They get nauseous, break out in sweat and shivers. While it can be embarrassing for some to go through this, it is a perfectly accepted phenomenon called stage fright.
TopDoctors describe stage fright as:
“…(a) state of anxiety or fear which occurs when an individual is faced with the requirement of performing in front of an audience (either directly or through a screen, e.g in front of a camera). It affects all kinds of people who have to appear in front of an audience, even when they are not necessarily speaking. For example, it can affect musicians, dancers, politicians or athletes.”
Some just find the stage a bit intimidating at first
Let us not mistake being initially shy as stage fright though. Some want to perform. They dream of showcasing their talents to a big audience. It is just scary to take the first step, especially when you are young.
This is why some seasoned performers often take on the role of mentors. They are aware of the tension of wanting to be on stage and being unsure of one’s ability. They have a perfect understanding of how it is to be an amateur.
Keith Urban has his way of helping up and coming singers
In a video that has been viewed over 5 million times, we see Keith Urban prove why he is a living legend. During his performances, he selects a rising star to share the stage with him. It is a lovely gesture, isn’t it?
He chose two talented people!
During the video, we hear Keith talk about how he has chosen two singers to share the stage with him. He was wowed by both of them. Though normally committed to just choosing one, he makes an exception and chooses another to jam with him.
She is set to perform in front of 20,000 people!
Keith introduces Lauren Spencer-Smith on the stage. She appears excited and nervous at first. Who would not be? She is just 11 years old and is about to perform in front of a large crowd.
Without much ado, she sings
Keith starts to strum his guitar as Lauren puts the microphone close to her. We hear the haunting melody of Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love. She opens her mouth and she sings.
Her voice is beautiful
Lauren completely captures the audience’s attention. They constantly cheer on her with every note she sings. We are not surprised. Her voice is as lovely as she is.
They duet
Minutes into the performance, Keith sings with Lauren. Their duet is great. It feels like Lauren is as seasoned as Keith is!
She shines
Even though they sing a few lines together, the moment is very much Lauren’s. She sings from the heart. She gives justice to the song’s beautiful lyrics and melody.
After she finishes her song, the audience claps for her very loudly. They know when they see a star in the making.
Guess what? Years after this video was taken, we find out that Lauren actually became an American Idol finalist. Isn’t that cool?
Kudos to Keith Urban for being generous enough to give up and comers Lauren a place to shine.
Kudos to Lauren for being brave enough to share her talent with the world at such a young age.
