Adopting a child is one of the most selfless things a person can do. It’s beautiful to open your home to someone new and take them in as one of your own. That’s why pretty much everyone agrees that adoptive parents are heroes.
Most of the time when a child gets adopted, they know they have a loving family that’ll look after them forever. But it doesn’t always work out. And when it doesn’t, a child can suffer from devastating consequences.
Anthony’s story
A young boy named Anthony had a rough time. A family adopted him when he was just four years old. He thought he’d found a forever home.
A terrible betrayal
But then something terrible happened. The family abandoned Anthony at the age of 11. They took him to the hospital and just left, not telling him anything. This had to have been so frightening.
A pattern of behavior
Unfortunately, it wasn’t like this was just a one-time thing. The family had done the same thing to another child in the past. Somehow, their actions weren’t considered illegal.
A hero stepped up
When something terrible happens, kids need a hero. Luckily, one stepped up and was ready to take on the task of raising a child. That man’s name is Peter Mutabazi.
He’d fostered before
Peter wanted to be a foster dad. So, he brought two brothers into his life. He didn’t realize he could love someone as much as he did them. But he had to make the difficult decision to send them back to their biological family.
Another chance
Even though he was hurting from losing the two brothers, Peter wasn’t ready to give up. When he was asked to foster for the weekend, he almost turned it down. But then, he changed his mind and agreed.
A surprise
Peter said that most kids remind you that you’re not their father. But Anthony was different. It was only a few minutes before he started calling Peter “Dad.”
A single question
Peter thought that was odd. So, he asked the social worker about Anthony’s situation. When he heard what had happened to the young boy, he was appalled. He didn’t even realize what Anthony’s prior adoptive parents had done was illegal. He immediately felt awful for the boy.
Speaking out
Peter talked about the situation when he found out the truth. He said, “They signed an agreement relinquishing their parental rights and never looked back. I was completely shocked! I could not believe what I was hearing. I began to cry out of anger for what these people had done to this 11-year-old child.”
Deciding to adopt
Peter knew he had to help. He said, “I refused to allow him to be cast aside again. Besides, he was already calling me ‘Dad.’ I asked the social worker to provide me with a placement letter so I could enroll him in school the following day. She asked me about 100 times if I was serious and we both cried tears of joy.”
A happily ever after
Thanks to Peter, Anthony now has a new home. He finally has the loving parent he’d never had before. He even shares Peter’s last name.
This is truly a heartwarming story that shows how one person can change someone else’s life. To his son, Peter is a hero.
